LOONA (이달의 소녀), stylized as LOOΠΔ, is a South Korean girl group. The group consists of HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu (originally), Go Won, and HyeJu. Active since October 2016, they debuted on August 19, 2018, with their first mini album, [+ +] under BlockBerry Creative. The group is currently inactive.
Group Name Meaning: ‘이달의 소녀’ translates to ‘Girl of the Month’. “Girl of the Month” references their pre-debut project, in which each new member was revealed with a solo each in a new month, then joined a new sub-unit. “LOONA” is derived from the first letters in each syllable block in “이달의 소녀” (ㅇ, ㄷ, ㅇ, ㅅ, ㄴ) rearranged to ‘ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ’, which looks like the characters ‘LOOΠΔ’, which romanized becomes “LOONA”. “LOONA” also is a re-spelling of ‘luna’, which means moon in multiple other languages, showing the group’s concept that relates to the moon.

Pre-Debut Project:
LOONA‘s original concept was to execute their debut project. Each month, a new member was revealed and released a solo title track, usually accompanied by a duet with a previous member. These would be in a Single album format titled by the name of the member revealed. On October 5, 2016, the first member HeeJin made her debut with her single ViViD, followed by HyunJin on November 17 with her song Around You. HeeJin and HyunJin made their duet debut with the b-side on HyunJin’s single album titled I’ll Be There. HaSeul made her debut on December 15 with her song Let Me In, accompanied by a trio Chrismas Carol song between the three members titled The Carol.
In 2017, the 4th member, YeoJin, made her debut on January 16 with her song Kiss Later, debuting at only 14 years old. Her single album also included two duet songs; My Sunday, a duet between HeeJin and HyunJin and My Melody, a duet between HaSeul and YeoJin. Now that 4 members had been revealed, they would form a sub-unit, namely LOONA 1/3. However YeoJin’s parents did not want her to debut with LOONA 1/3 and wanted her to study, so the 5th member ViVi filled her place. LOONA 1/3 debuted on March 13, 2017 with their mini album Love&Live, with the title track sharing the same name.
In April 2017, ViVi would officially be making her own solo debut, and she did with the song Everyday I love You, featuring member HaSeul. It was accompanied with another song, a remix of the title track named Everyday I Need You, featuring member JinSoul, who at the time was not revealed. Up to this point, every song in the LOONA discography (apart from LOONA 1/3) so far had a music video, totalling up to 11. LOONA 1/3 released a repackaged album titled Love&Evil, accompanied by the title track Sonatine.
On May 23, the 6th member Kim Lip made her solo debut with her song Eclipse. This marked a turning point in the growth of the fanbase, and the creative (and music) direction the group was going in. This was followed by the debut on JinSoul on June 26, with the song Singing In The Rain, and Choerry on July 28 with the song Love Cherry Motion. Both JinSoul and Choerry’s single albums also featured second song, a duet with the previous member. The 3 members debuted as a sub-unit, titled ODD EYE CIRCLE, with the mini album Mix&Match and the title track Girl Front. A repackage of the album titled Max&Match was released on October 31, with the title track Sweet Crazy Love.
On November 28, 2017, the 9th member Yves made her solo debut with the song New. A remix of The Carol titled The Carol 2.0 was subsequently released, performed by members ViVi, Choerry and Yves. The 10th member Chuu made her debut on December 28 with her song Heart Attack, which is one of the most successful LOONA songs and the most streamed LOONA solo debut. This was followed by Go Won, debuting on January 30, 2018 with her song One&Only. The 12th and final member Olivia Hye made her debut on March 30 with her song Egoist. Chuu, Go Won and Olivia Hye’s debuts all featured a duet with the previous member, like ODD EYE CIRCLE.
The last 4 members of LOONA would form the sub-unit yyxy, and would make their debut on May 30 with their mini album Beauty&TheBeat, and the title track love4eva produced by Canadian Popstar Grimes. They are the only pre-debut sub-unit to not have a repackage of their mini album. Instead, plans for the OT12 debut commenced, and LOONA released the lead single of their debut, titled favOrite. This whole pre-debut project had led the way to the OT12 debut on August 19, 2018 with their mini album [+ +] and the title track Hi High.
Dispute with Agency:
On November 25, 2022, it was announced that member Chuu was removed from the group due to claims of “power abuse”. Due to this, fans organized a boycott on BlockBerry Creative contents and a petition for the court. On November 28, it was reported by JTBC that nine members of LOONA, excluding HyunJin and ViVi, had filed a lawsuit to terminate their contracts. On January 13, 2023, it was revealed that JinSoul, Kim Lip, HeeJin, and Choerry had won to have their contracts injuncted, and would be leaving BlockBerry Creative in response, while the remaining five had lost their cases.
HyunJin and ViVi then filed to terminate their contracts on February 2. On March 17, it was announced that HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry had signed with MODHAUS, founded by former LOONA creative director Jaden Jeong. Subsequently, on April 1 they were announced to be continuing their activities as ARTMS. On April 4, Chuu was announced to have signed with ATRP as their first artist. HyunJin and ViVi won their cases and injuncted their contracts on May 9, and subsequently signed with agency CTDENM, founded by former BBC director Yoon Do-yeon on June 11.
After repealing their lawsuits, the remaining members, HaSeul, YeoJin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye had their contracts injuncted on June 16. On June 21, it was announced that HaSeul had also signed with MODHAUS and would be joining ARTMS. YeoJin, Go Won, and Olivia Hye also joined CTDENM on July 5, with Olivia Hye changing her stage name to HyeJu. On September 15, 2023, CTDENM debuted Loossemble. On March 13, 2024, Yves signed with PAIX PER MIL.
With no members under the company, the group is currently inactive, but not disbanded as stated by the members who hope to have the opportunity to promote together once again. All members have had activities re-debuted since leaving, including having an ODD EYE CIRCLE comeback. Efforts by BBC to undo these court decisions, such as attempting to claim the name ‘LOONA’, submitting petitions to ban certain members from the industry, continuing LOONA promotions, and submitting repeals, have failed.
Post-LOONA Activities:
[Post-LOONA shall be defined as activities after June 16, 2023]. After HeeJin, HaSeul, Kim Lip, JinSoul & Choerry joined MODHAUS as ARTMS, rumours circulated that the pre-debut sub-unit ODD EYE CIRCLE would be making a comeback. These rumours were later confirmed as the trademark for the name was registered and teasers were released. ODD EYE CIRCLE made their first comeback after 6 years on July 12, 2023 with the mini album Version Up and the title track Air Force One.
On September 15, HyunJin, YeoJin, ViVi, Go Won & HyeJu (formerly Olivia Hye) debuted as Loossemble with their self titled mini album, and the title track Sensitive. Chuu made a comeback with her mini album Howl and a title track of the same name on October 18, along with a pre-release from her album titled Underwater, HaSeul released a digital single titled Plastic Candy on October 26, while HeeJin made her comeback with her mini album K and the title track Algorithm on October 31. ARTMS released The Carol 3.0 on December 1, 2024, sung by the 5 members of the group.
On February 13, Chuu released a digital single titled Chocolate, celebrating Valentine’s day. ARTMS revealed their plans to debut as a 5-member group, preceded by 4 pre-release singles; Birth (March 31), Flower Rhythm (April 11), Candy Crush (April 25) and Air (May 10). The group officially made their debut on May 31 with their studio album DALL (Devine All Love&Live) (a reference to LOONA 1/3) and the title track Virtual Angel.
Meanwhile, Loossemble made their first comeback on April 15, 2024, with the mini album One Of A Kind, and the title track Girls’ Night. After Yves signed with PAIX PER MIL in March 2024, she swiftly made her long awaited solo comeback with her mini album LOOP and the title track of the same name, featuring Korean-American rapper Lil Cherry. LOOP (feat. Lil Cherry) is the most streamed Post-LOONA song to date, due to it’s house influence and popularity.
Chuu made her comeback on June 25 with her mini album Strawberry Rush, with the title track of the same name. On August 30, Yves released a pre-release single from her upcoming comeback titled Tik Tok. On September 2, 2024, Loossemble made their second comeback with their mini album TTYL and the title track of the same name. The album also featured 2 promotional B-sides, Confessions and Cotton Candy, each having their own music video. The comeback was directed by Ryan Jhun, who directed Loona’s 4th mini album [&] and produced the album’s title track PTT (Paint The Town). Yves made her first solo comeback with her second mini album I Did and the title track Viola.
Future Post-LOONA Activities:
ARTMS‘ agency, MODHAUS, has also applied for the trademark registration of the pre-debut sub-unit yyxy. There are no revealed plans for the unit yet as none of the unit’s members are under MODHAUS (Yves under PAIX PER MIL, Chuu under ATRP, Go Won & Olivia Hye under CTDENM). yyxy is also the only pre-debut sub-unit without an album repackage, and it is theorised that they might finally have a repackage after almost half a decade. Additionally, the solo comeback of ARTMS member HaSeul has been speculated among fans, as HeeJin made hers while ODD EYE CIRCLE made their own comeback. She had time between this period and may have prepared some music for fans.
