Exclusive Interview with Jiheon
I had a chat with kpop trainee, Jiheon. We talked about training experience, independent management, and future aspirations.
[Date October 16th, 2024]
Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in K-pop?
I grew up as a normal kid, but I always had a passion for dancing and performing. Watching idols who looked so cool on stage, performing with such energy and style, really inspired me. I admired the way they connected with their fans through music and performance, and that made me want to pursue a career in K-pop.
What challenges did you face when deciding to move to Korea for your training?
A big challenge for me was definitely homesickness and adjusting to the cultural differences. Being away from home wasn’t easy, and I had to learn how to navigate a new environment. But I realized that having a strong mental attitude was the most important thing to get through it all.
How did you first get interested in K-pop, and who are your biggest influences?
I grew up in an environment where K-pop was always playing, especially because my mom was a big fan of old school K-pop artists like BIGBANG, 2NE1, and PSY. As I got older, I discovered more about K-pop myself, and BTS became my biggest influence at that time.
What has your training regimen been like? Can you describe a typical day for you?
Recently, I’ve been taking a lot of rest after preparing for certain things, but on a typical day, I usually practice at night. That’s when I focus on improving my skills and staying sharp.
How do you handle the pressure and expectations that come with being a trainee?
To be honest, I still feel the pressure, but I remind myself that not everyone gets this big opportunity to be a trainee. I focus on doing my best and improving what I can.
What cultural differences have you encountered since moving to Korea, and how have you adapted to them?
The main cultural difference I noticed was how fast-paced the work environment is. People tend to do everything quickly, and I’ve adapted to that mindset over time.
What motivated you to pursue an independent management route rather than joining a larger agency?
After deciding not to sign with my previous company, I realized I wanted to be independent for now until I find a company that truly fits me. Signing a contract is a big commitment, so I want to make sure it’s the right choice.
What are your short-term and long-term goals in the K-pop industry?
My short-term goal is to get into a company or a survival show to showcase my skills. In the long term, I want to build a strong fanbase, make meaningful connections, and form friendships with others in the industry.
How do you envision your music style or concept as an artist?
I envision my music style to be diverse, incorporating various genres and concepts, as I enjoy exploring different sounds and ideas.
What message do you hope to convey through your music?
I want to convey that, even though times are tough, we will get through this together and that no one is alone in their struggles.
What advice would you give to other aspiring K-pop trainees from foreign countries?
My advice is to work hard and take care of your image and attitude, as those are the most important aspects of being in this industry.
Do you have a message for your fans?
I’m so thankful to have your support. I will do my best to repay your love and make you proud of me soon.
