Nogizaka46  (乃木坂46) is a Japanese girl group managed by Nogizaka46 LLC and releasing under Sony Music. The group debuted in August 2011 with 36 members and currently consists of 41 members divided in 4 generations. At the beginning, they were established as an official rival to AKB48, but all aspects of their rivalry are now gone. They were the first group in the Sakamichi franchise, consisting of Nogizaka46 and its sister groups: Hinakatazaka46 and Sakurazaka46.

 Members are divided into senbatsu, the part of the group performing a single’s A-side, and under members, not chosen to senbatsu. Unders usually have a separate song on the single. A new senbatsu is chosen for each single, with the most important position in the line-up being the center.

Group Name Meaning: The group was named after the location of the Sony Music Japan offices near Nogizaka Station. The number “46” was chosen as a direct challenge to AKB48, implying that Nogizaka46 would succeed with fewer members.
