– Several months after DEUX disbanded, Sungjae released his debut solo album, As I Told You, on November 20, 1995.
– On November 20, 1995, he performed the title track from his album on an SBS music program before returning to his hotel with his girlfriend and several backup dancers. The following day, he was found dead in his hotel room. Police initially ruled his death a heart attack caused by exhaustion and overwork. However, subsequent investigations revealed 28 needle marks on his right arm, and an autopsy detected traces of a horse tranquilizer in his system.
His girlfriend was later arrested and charged in connection with his death. Prosecutors argued that she had purchased the tranquilizer and had been alone with him in the room at the time, while the backup dancers were staying elsewhere. She was initially sentenced to life imprisonment but was later acquitted on appeal due to insufficient evidence.
After the trial, she reportedly changed her name, underwent plastic surgery, and eventually became a dentist. The circumstances surrounding his death continue to be the subject of speculation among fans, some of whom believe his girlfriend was responsible. However, the case remains unresolved, and no one has been legally found responsible for his death.
