HUNJIYA Facts:
— She spent most of her life moving from South Korea to the USA as a child. She returned to Korea to make music. Her confusion, which has changed her language, her longing for her distant family, and her concerns about her identity became the subject of her music in a natural way.
— She has a brother.
— Her favorite things are cats, having friends, crochet and Thai food.
— Her given name (Hyunji) is a common one in South Korea. However, it becomes very unique in the USA. Likewise, cultural differences after moving places and the frustration of not being able to communicate well with someone are topics that always come to mind when talking about the “diaspora.”
— When she used the name Hunjiya in the United States, people said it was very unique. Then, when she went to Korea, I changed it according to the Korean language. She didn’t know that there were so many people named Hyunji in South Korea because she didn’t have many Korean friends (or know many Korean people) around her.
— At first she used her English name, Alice, but it didn’t mean anything to her. Yet, she thought it was okay.
— When she first came to Korea from the USA or when she and her parents went to the Stafes, there were many times when she couldn’t say what she wanted to say or couldn’t understand what she was saying.
— She was overwhelmed by language and cultural differences to the point that she often thought about whether her Korean was good enough, she was Korean, what Korean was to her, or even if she didn’t speak Korean well or understand culture completely.
— She learned to play the piano and clarinet when she was young, which was close to what her parents wanted her to do.
— When she was in high school or when she saw the covers and songs posted by Asian American artists on YouTube, she wanted to try that path out. She bought a cheap ukulele from Amazon, played it, covered it, and played a guitar her brother didn’t use.
— She used to post music on YouTube when she was in high school, but didn’t show it to people as she found it embarrassing. Then, a girl she was in a Science class with found her YouTube channel and showed it to everyone. She was so shocked and wondered what to do; fortunately, there were many good reactions.
— Since then, her friends had helped her a lot with things such as practice and playing instruments. She gained a lot of confidence in continuing her music and applying for a specific program.
— She has a similar life experience to pH-1. When she met him and talked to him about a song of his she was featured in, he told her it was his personal story when he had only been in South Korea for six months. She thinks he, like her, feels the language and cultural barriers, which is why he doesn’t have deep relationships with people.
— For her, music is more of a therapy and a way to be concise and make sense, instead of overthinking and stretching out what she really wants to say.
— She think people generally have a hard time explaining their emotions. So she, as well as others, are probably trying to be honest. It’s hard to explain her feelings in real life and she tends to keep them to herself, so she tries to be honest in my songs. She feels like freeing herself through music is a blessing.
— She loves making harmonies. To her, the guitar is the most comfortable and precious piece. She usually makes any song into a guitar and puts other instruments on top of it.
— As of 2022, she was still awkward and not used to writing lyrics in Korean. She really wants to convey all my emotions in Korean; however, at that time, she wasn’t sure about how to do it well yet.
— Her pre-debut album Look After August isn’t available on Korean streaming platforms, but is on Chinese ones. As of 2022, she was looking for a distributor to release the album in Korea as well.
— On March 8, 2024, she took part in one of the iScream Vol.30 remixes for Taeyeon‘s To. X.

About the author

Hello everybody! You can call me Midge here. I've been an author on KProfiles since November 2019.

I like finding nugu (=super underrated) K-Pop artists. I think I've found some of the nuguest artists I could come across.

Unfortunately, I tend to be extremely forgetful and a master procrastinator, so I apologize for that.

I have a long-*ss bias list, so I don't think it can fit here.

Be nice and enjoy!
