Behind The Calla #6 - End of Spring
Welcome back to Behind The CALLA. For this behind we will be discussing the End of Spring album, including how the concept was formed, the album name, tracklist and where abouts I see each member in their careers at the present moment. This series is inspired by
@LostInTheDream ’s ‘A Chapter In Ever After’.
After No More Fairytale, I knew my exams would interrupt my ability to promote CALLA, and oh boy they did. But I’d begun working on the comeback before I’d even started my exams so I would be ready to release it as soon as possible.
I’m pretty sure I had the entire tracklist apart from LIPS prepared prior to 10th April, due to the fact I remember only wanting I’ve IVE to be released before solidifying the tracklist lol. Why was I so set on an IVE song though? Well those who are observant may have realised just like Shoot Your Shot, each member of CALLA has a song that matches their face claim. Firework for Sophia, Milkshake for Hyunjoo, Cherry for Emma, Blind Letter for Juni. IVE didn’t really have any summery songs but I knew they’d come through.
The name End of Spring comes from a song by ONEWE. During my GCSEs, I loved this song so much, because it was so lively and happy for the summer, and so ever since I would associate the song with the feeling of finishing my exams. So because the album would be released after my A-Levels finished, I felt it was a fitting name. Originally, the album title was “Summer Party” but I thought that name was so bland. I’m glad I changed it.
Also, there was never a cancelled single album, that was just for world building since the CALLA hiatus was so long for the fik-verse. But I like to imagine Friday Night and Cherry are those two songs from that album as their concepts match well but sort of stick out from the rest of the album.
For the tracklist, I knew the concept was just summer. So unlike the other albums so far, I feel there isn’t much of a consistent sound in this album. But I think it gives the album its own unique charm.
For the title track, originally I wanted to use Chi Mat Ba Ram by BB Girls (Brave Girls) due to the fact one of the first lines of the song is “the girls are back”, which felt special for the end of CALLA’s hiatus. However, the main issue with this song is that it doesn’t have a proper rap in it, which felt unfair for Juni. Egotistic is one of my legacy favourite songs and my most played song of all time on Spotify, and so it’s a special song to me. It felt important to give the song to CALLA. It’s quite different from their previous sound but since it was specifically a summer release I felt it was ok to give them a little concept switch.
If I’m being honest, for Friday Night I can’t remember why I chose it. But it’s such a bop you can’t blame me. Sonamoo deserved better fr.
Practically the rest of the tracklist was all because they’re such good summer songs. I was tempted to take Love Or Die off the tracklist since it isn’t really a song I listen to but it kept coming up on my shuffle so I just couldn’t remove it. It felt like such a perfect song for CALLA.
I decided that Juni should’ve written Egotistic because she deserved to write a hit fr, and then Milkshake because during her vlog she made a milkshake so I like to think she wrote it on her holiday. And as for Cherry, due to how rap heavy it is I also felt it was a perfect Juni song. Lips is composed by Yujin for a dumb reason - EXY wrote the song and EXY and Yujin are just mother and daughter if you get me you get me. So if mother EXY wrote Lips it only felt fair Yejoon who has a Yujin claim should be credited on the song too. As for Blind Letter, it’s quite a sad but beautiful song and I felt it would be something Emma would’ve written during her emo era.
For this era, I think we can all agree that it was a Junphia era. With Sophia showing off why she’s the lead vocalist and Juni proving why she’s one of (if not) the best fik-rappers. But I feel all five members took it in turns to stand out, such as Hyunjoo in Ladi Dadi, Emma in Blind Letter and Yejoon in Friday Night. Even though some of the songs were unfair, the album itself is quite well distributed with members taking it in turns to have the most lines. Hyunjoo had the most lines once, same as Sophia, Juni twice, same as Emma, and Yejoon thrice.
So, what’s next for CALLA? Well, first of all, you can expect a big announcement next week. Definitely keep your eyes pealed for that. I’m also very intent on making up for the lack of promotion since February and have two comebacks planned for before October at least. Though my plans for the second one may get interrupted due to starting University. I honestly don’t feel very motivated to work on my groups at the moment, which is why this behind took so long to make, and why I keep missing the dates for these line distribution videos. But yeah. I’ll keep pushing to get content out :’)
Aside from that, CALLA will also be performing at The Wren Media’s Summer Music Festival.
Thank you for keeping up with CALLA’s journey. See you again soon!
