What Got You Into K-Pop?

We each have a unique story of why we ended up loving the vast world that is K-pop. Sometimes it's we just stumbled onto it, others it's friends badgered us to listen to it. What's your story?

For me, it's that I have a Korean aunt so I've always been around the music but I never truly listened to it until my cousin (her daughter) made my family mix cds with songs from popular k-pop groups (at that time) on them. So those cds were how I discovered K-pop and fell in love with the music. At that time, the groups I listened to were Super Junior, U-Kiss, MBLAQ, SHINee, TVXQ/DBSK, BIGBANG, and 2NE1. But later, I found EXO on YouTube a few months after their debut and fell in love with them. Fast forward a few years to when NCT debuted and were recommended to by YouTube and that's how I found my second favorite group of all time.

I wanted to expand my music taste, and I saw my cousin listening to Kpop on the Friend Activity column on Spotify, so I thought I'd give it a try. I listened to 2NE1 because I've always loved I Am The Best and the suggestions on Spotify and YouTube led me to find other groups.
I actually was into some Kpop in 2012 after Gangnam Style but it was mostly Hyuna's songs. I kinda turned away from it when BTS became popular in America (no offense Army). I felt like they were being overhyped and I don't really like overhyped stuff, so I shied away from Kpop for awhile, but now I'm into it thanks to 2NE1.

Yeah, I try to stay away from overhyped groups unless their music or, in GOT7's case, their members reel me in.

Well mine is quite interesting
I was reading a story on a website like wattpad but not. It was a fanfiction about EXO. I didn't know it was a fanfiction at the time. It was a very good story it was a girl who was mates with a group of guys called EXO. Back then I didnt know who EXO was. The story is OT12 ? I didn't know roger then let alone that term). After they story I Googled EXO assuming it was based off a TV show or film (like Teen Wolf) but instead I found a kpop group. I was amazed as I wasnt expecting a bunch af Korean guys singing and dancing in Korean. But I'm glad i did. I watched Wolf and Growl and I quickly fell in love. I found Kpop my newest obsession. Afterwards I was obsessed with EXO and looked on the internet for merchandise. This way back in April 2018. I have been a fan of EXO and Kpop ever since!

Sorry this was soo long and if it sounds weird like I'm telling a story I'm sorry I cant help it. I get excited and I find it's the easiest way to describe things sometimes.

I didn’t find Kpop kpop found me I was on Spotify shuffling random songs and BTS save me came on I was like wtf then I listen to it .......got stuck in my head and my someone in my class requested the next day asked the teacher to play Jimin/serendipity and I completely fell in love with it

I've always been into East Asian stuff, mostly Japanese. I once stumbled upon kpop, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. After some time, I've watched a video about like matching a song to game character and Overwatch's D.Va was matched with 2NE1's 'I Am The Best'. I couldn't sleep, so I've tried to find the song and I immediately feel in love with that! I found out that I found 2NE1 the day after they had disbanded But they still remain my favourite group of all time! ❤

It doesn't sound weird at all! EXO is one of my favorite groups of all time! I found their song MAMA in 2012/13 when I was YouTubing SHINee songs and it was recommended to me. I've loved them ever since!

I agree with you guys about how overhyped BTS is. It's the main reason I don't stan them. So many people listen to BTS then think they know all there is to know about k-pop without ever having listened to another group. I won't deny that they're a talented group but I refuse to stan them. My friend recommended Moonchild by RM and I loved it so I went to listen to some other stuff and loved that too. Then when my friend found out I liked kpop she just shoved a bunch of songs at me so I listened and here I am now
