Get back in the car. Comment on how I didn't know there were moose around here and ask Hanchyeol to drive.
You step back away from the now dead moose. You look at Hanchyeol, then back at the moose. "I didn't know there were moose around here..." you say, quietly. "Hey, Hanchyeol? Could you drive from this point forward? That was.... kind of traumatizing, not gonna lie." Hanchyeol nods their head, then moves across the road to get into the driver's seat. Their pale skin seemed even more so in the headlights of your blue 2017 Volkswagen Passat, which you were so proud of.
You sit down in the passenger's seat and try not to look at the moose as the car moves past it, probably trying to avoid the guilt of having hit it in the first place. You stare out the window and watch the dark trees move past you for about 45 minutes while Hanchyeol drove, occasionally humming random songs that popped into their head.
Eventually the car slowed to a stop and you saw two unmistakable appearances come into view. A small Japanese girl with shoulder-length black hair, your good friend Yoko, and a tall boy with black-to-faded-purple dyed hair that was long enough to almost reach his ears. That was Yeonjun, the smartest person in your friend group by far. You get out of the car and wave to them, while Hanchyeol runs over and hugs them both so tightly that you questioned how either of them could breathe. You open the trunk of your car and pull out the bags that you and Hanchyeol had packed.
Even though you were going to be there for a week, Hanchyeol only had a small backpack with all of their belongings in it. "I don't need everything I've ever owned to go camping for a week. Plus, overpacking ruins the whole idea of being away from the modern world... or whatever it is we planned this trip for." You, however, packed a bag for you and a bag with anything anyone would need. Spare clothes, extra toiletries, a pocket knife, and a book you'd been reading called "Way of the Future".
You hauled all of the bags over your shoulders and walked over to your friends, who were now conversing over what color Yeonjun should dye his hair next. Yoko had said silver, Hanchyeol had said dark green, and Yeonjun was trying to figure out a way to compromise both options into one in a way that wouldn't make his head look like it was starting to rot. You decided to end the debate and change the subject. "Ready to go?" Yeonjun almost jumped, as you'd approached so quietly. He then, however, collected himself and said "The sooner we get to the cabin, the earlier we can eat. I'm hungry."
The four of you turn to the woods and begin to follow a trail until you see a big, open, metal gate in front of you. "They take security seriously here, huh?" Yoko says, "I guess we should close it once we pass through, appease whoever owns the land." You all walk through the gate and work together to drag it down, closing it. It isn't until after that you realize you don't know how to open it again.
"Oh well... I guess we have a week to figure it out?" Hanchyeol says optimistically.
Inside the walls of this wooded area, there have actually been several trees cut down, probably to allow you to see the cabin better from a distance. You grab the bags again and walk towards the wooden cabin that you will be calling home for the next week. You reach for the doorknob and realize it's a bit sticky, which was unexpected. You turn the knob and the door opens immediately, which is strange. "You know, for someone with such a big gate at the front of the property, you'd probably think they'd lock the front door." Yeonjun says sarcastically.
You let out a small chuckle and start to observe the room you are now facing. It's dark, with the only real light coming from the cracks of light in between planks of the wall and a large window on the left side. There was no glass in the window, so you had a feeling that wildlife would have to become your best friend for a while. You see directly in front of you a wide staircase going up to a second floor, where you assumed everyone would be sleeping. There was a fire stove on your right side, along with a sink and a broken microwave sitting on a countertop. You decide that maybe you should've brought more dry food with you. "Let's eat!" chimes Yeonjun, and all 4 of you pull sandwiches from your "spare items" bag, take a seat on the floor due to the lack of real chairs, then begin to eat.
You look at the watch on your left wrist,
10:00PM. You look up at your friends and say "Alright, it's getting late. I'm going to go to sleep now." They all start to protest but eventually give up. You stand up and begin walking up the stairs, hearing them creak with each and every step you take. As you reach the top of the staircase you find a big, open room with a large window on the right side of it. There are 4 beds lined up on the left side, feet facing the window. Some cultures say you shouldn't do that, but apparently whoever owns this house didn't mind. You look out from the window and realize it faces out to the front of the house. You make a mental note of that, climb into the second bed on the left, and drift away to sleep.
What you assume to be a few hours later, you hear a crack from outside and your eyes shoot open. You see something move at the front of the house, and lift your head partially to get a better look. There's a tall, bulky figure standing outside, staring at the cabin. You couldn't make out any facial details, as you were pretty sure the figure was wearing a mask. Then you remember, it's only supposed to be you, Yeonjun, Yoko, and Hanchyeol here... -yc-
(Sorry it's so long, I got caught up in the detail-work)
