BEHIND THE CALLA
Welcome to Behind The Calla. This is a little series I will be updating during every CALLA comeback, and is inspired by
@Lost_in_the_Dream. Throughout this series, I will be analysing the creative process behind making the group, revealing all my dirty little secrets, the biggest being some of my decisions were made as a joke, though most were chosen seriously. I hope the series will be fun. For part 1 of Behind The Calla, we will be looking at how CALLA came to be.
MAKING CALLA
Sadly, I deleted the exact original notes I took while planning CALLA, and there is no way to recover them. However, I do remember small parts of the process.
Before they were CALLA, they were a 4 member group named ROSA, ROSA being taken from Spanish meaning ‘Pink’. The exact names of the ROSA members have been lost, however their stage names were Rhea, Ollie, Sophia and Amber, with their face claims as Yujin of IVE, Yeri of Red Velvet, Tzuyu of TWICE and Nagyung of fromis_9.
Constructing ROSA
The creative process of CALLA does begin with ROSA, and believe it or not took place somewhere between the end of June and mid July. The biggest thing to consider with ROSA is why I chose the 4 idols I did. The biggest factor was that I wanted to give ROSA a mature yet beautiful concept, and to do this comfortably I wanted 4 idols who were over the age of 18. I also wanted the 4 idols to have plenty of photos behind them so that there were a variety of options when posting about them. Though IVE debuted in 2021, Yujin herself has been an idol since 2018, she is my IVE bias, she was born in 2003, and I believe she has a mature yet elegant vibe to her. Yeri and Tzuyu have been around since 2014 and 2015 respectively, and are also the maknaes of their groups, meaning their ages were just about where I needed them to be. The original idol’s birth years were another major part of the process, as I didn’t want to change their ages too much. The most I was willing to change an idol’s birth year was about 3 years. Yeri and Tzuyu also fit the concept I was aiming for well, and so they were added on board. Finally, Nagyung debuted in 2018 like Yujin, and was spot on the age I needed. She is also an idol I really like and so Nagyung was the final piece I needed for ROSA.
Now, the first stage name I chose for ROSA was Sophia. I can’t explain it but Tzuyu looks so much like a Sophia (if I were to give her an English name). I gave the stage names Rhea, Ollie and Amber afterwards because, I’m sure you can see, the first letter of each name spells R.O.S.A.
However, goddamn ITZY EXISTS. You all know this about me, I’m a huge midzy. And my girl Yeji was right there. Perfect age, perfect for the concept. This was also around the time Checkmate teasers were dropping with the royal concept, and like YEJIIII. I also really like the name Emma, and because of its 2-syllable pronunciation I felt it was a good stage name to give an idol. But now ROSA had 5 members, one of which did not fit the name ROSA. So I needed a new name…
The beginning of CALLA
The name CALLA comes from the flower calla lily. Why did I choose the calla lily, you ask. The answer is idk, the name CALLA is pretty. I also realised upon trying to find a hangul spelling, CALLA sounds a lot like “colour”. The stage names Rhea, Ollie, Sophia and Amber were no longer necessary, and so I needed to start choosing new ones. I left Tzuyu as Sophia as I really liked how the name fit her. “Ollie” lost her stage name, and was given the name Hyunjoo. “Rhea” went through the same loss, becoming Yejoon. However, “Amber” got a bit more of an exciting story. I gave her the name Jooyeon thanks to Eunseo of WJSN, but I wanted a little stage name for her. I came up with Juni, and found out it has nordic roots meaning “June”. So that’s why Juni’s birthday is the 1st of June. I also gave Emma the real name “Nayeon” because of TWICE’s Nayeon.
For Sophia, I did not want to erase Tzuyu’s Taiwanese roots, and so it was important for me to give her a Chinese/Taiwanese name. Despite the rumours (there are no rumours), I did not steal the name from JELO’s Daiyu. Daiyu is actually a name I found many many months ago back when I used to make fake groups in private. I felt the name was pretty, and fit nicely, so I gave it to Sophia.
So that is how CALLA was created.
WHO AND WHY ARE CALLA?
HYUNJOO:
Hyunjoo is the leader, main dancer, sub-vocalist and face of CALLA. I can’t be sure if these were her first positions or not, I’m sorry, but these are her current positions. I believe the positions were based on the original ROSA positions.
Hyunjoo is the younger sister of a dancer, hence her position as face. In this universe, fans of the dancer were anticipating her debut, and are glad she finally got her opportunity. Hyunjoo as a person is quite bubbly and happy. She sometimes feels harsh as a leader, so her style tends to be based on being caring and understanding to her members’ concerns. Her story about being a bit nervous to take on the role as leader is based on Yeji’s in ITZY.
How I imagine her voice is being something a little bit like Joy from Red Velvet (ironic innit, based on Joy, represented by Yeri). She tends to sing higher and sweeter parts in CALLA’s songs, though is only a sub-vocalist as I imagine her voice isn’t as strong. I would rank her 4th in vocals, but 1st in dance.
SOPHIA:
Sophia is the lead vocalist and lead dancer of CALLA.
I imagine Sophia having the most energy out of all her members. I feel her story is the most complex out of all the members, being born in Taiwan, but living in America and then becoming a cheerleader. But this is just how I see her as a person. I feel she wouldn’t like to be trapped somewhere for too long at a time, and is always trying to live to the fullest. I used to be a cheerleader, and so the idea of having a cheerleader in my group made me happy, though high school cheer is a bit different from allstar cheer (though, I don’t think I really became an all
star, maybe all
effort). Her cheers would increase her lung capacity, and the dances would increase her flexibility, rhythm and stage presence. I imagine she has the best stage presence in CALLA. Though her voice isn’t based off her, I imagine her voice being unique and deep, like Yuqi of (G)I-DLE, and so Sophia tends to sing lower yet powerful parts of CALLA songs. I place her as 2nd in vocals, and 3rd in dance.
JUNI:
Juni is the main rapper, sub-vocalist and visual of CALLA.
The visual position is always a tough one, and the most controversial position in irl kpop. In order to give this position fairly, I did want to consider who actually had the visual position in their real groups. Both Nagyung and Tzuyu hold the visual position 100% (and I’m not sure about Yujin), so it really came down to me. Tzuyu/Sophia is still gorgeous ofc, but I gave the position to Juni in the end as I’m really in love with Nagyung’s visuals.
A lot of female kpop rappers tend to just be the tomboy of their group, not always, but often. And I don’t think idols who are considered visuals have the same respect as other idols. Juni isn’t having it. She is pretty and talented. She raps and she looks like a harmless angel when she does it! (I’m not trying to attack real kpop idols, more stereotypes fans hold). But of course, she is a bit more than her rap and her visuals. I imagine her being quite chill and polite, keeping to herself a lot and being artistic. She is also a big fan of EXID and is very excited for their surprise comeback. For her vocals, she tends to sing lower parts similarly to Sophia, and despite being the weakest vocalist in CALLA I still imagine her being a lovely vocalist. She is 5th for vocals, 4th for dance and of course 1st in rap.
EMMA:
Emma is the lead dancer, sub-vocalist, sub-rapper and centre of CALLA.
Emma is CALLA’s all rounder. Despite being the member with the least training time, she is gifted, particularly in dance. I suppose as a midzy, it’s really hard for me to separate Yeji’s dance skills from Emma’s lol. She has a lot of dance technique, so I believe she spent her childhood training in dance, and also self teaching herself how to sing. She has good rhythm as well, placing her as a sub-rapper, though she hasn’t had a rap part in a CALLA song yet.
As a person, Emma is friendly and helpful. She grew up with a lot of sisters, so she has quite an older sister vibe to her even if she’s in the maknae line of CALLA. She doesn’t have any fears about approaching people and being helpful, though she is still on the quieter side. For vocals, she doesn’t have a specific style, and mostly sings parts that require a good range without being too intense. For vocals, she could easily be the lead vocalist in a group that isn’t CALLA. She’s ranked 3rd for vocals, 2nd for dance and 2nd for rap.
YEJOON:
Yejoon is the main vocalist, sub-rapper and maknae of CALLA.
Maknae out of the idols, maknae of CALLA. However, I personally don’t see Yejoon as having a maknae vibe. I think she is quite strong when it comes to her personally. She isn’t afraid to be loud and express her opinions. She is also quite independent, and working in a group was at first a bit challenging, but she really cares about her members so she was willing to get used to it for them. Yejoon is a classic stereotypical main vocalist, having a mid to high range and strong belts. Due to her vocal technique, she also has good flow which has landed her with the sub-rapper position as well. For vocals, she is obviously 1st, but for dance and rap she is 5th and 3rd.
And that is the end of part 1. The next part will be uploaded on another day without Pink.Aura schedules, and will cover the process behind CALLA's debut with Shoot Your Shot.
