So buying newjeans albums is bad?
Tws: pedophilia, exploitation of minors and brief mention of anti-semitism
At the end of the day, not everyone experiences Kpop in the same way. For some people, they buy loads of albums, watch loads of content, attend concerts and fansigns ect ect. For others, they're in it for the music and that's it.
In that same way, people will have different amounts of emotional investment into kpop. For some people, they don't really care about who they listen to if the music is good. For others, they're very conscious about what they listen to because they also want to send a message to big industries about their own stances. For example, many people have stopped supporting Kanye because of his anti-semitist remarks he has been making recently.
In Kpop, some of the biggest things people have boycott artists for is racism, sexism, or other extremely serious scandals such as the Burning Sun scandal. However, it seems over time another new reason to boycott artists is minors debuting. This is because, the first and second gen idols such as Sunmi, Hyuna, Boa or Taemin are now much older than they were at debut, and can now speak more openly about what they suffered from when they were younger. Most idols who debut as minors suffer at school due to schedules (you may see some idols joke/talk about the fact they failed education), have their privacy exploited (all idols experience this), become victims of bullying due to fan culture (IVE are a great example of this, with Wonyoung receiving hate daily, Leeseo being mocked online and Liz constantly being spoken about for her weight), and as my previous message with an interview with Hyuna, may even be starved so they can fit into the clothes they're wearing, or may not sleep properly at night due to schedules.
And then, issues with pedophilia. In NJ's case in particular, people defend Min Heejin because they don't think SHE is a pedophile. But regardless whether SHE herself is a pedophile, she has shown time and time again she is willing to cater for an audience of pedophiles. This is putting NewJeans at risk. NJ isn't the only group who experience this though. One thing I always hated was Yuna in Mafia era, because don't get me wrong she was gorgeous, but the concept was a lot more mature and she wore a lot of crop tops and stuff that showed off her body, which incited a lot of people discussing Yuna's "perfect body" despite the fact she was 17 at the time. But like, there was a video recently where a male idol (I can't remember who) hid in a group of older men and they played a game of guess who the idol is. And in this video, a lot of the men who were like 40 years old confessed they were huge Bunnies, watched their content, thought the members were so cute etc and you could see the male idol's face drop with how creepy he thought it was. Min Heejin has put these girls at risk of stuff like this.
BUT, despite all I have just said, whether you buy their albums is YOUR decision. Because chances are, you know you're not a pedophile and therefore YOU are not consuming their content in a harmful way. You're one person, and so your decision whether to or not buy their albums and listen to their music doesn't change anything. But, these are the reasons you may see more and more people refuse to support groups with minors. It's difficult once you fall in love with an idol, like I did with Yuna, to stop supporting them no matter how uncomfortable you are. When the AOA bullying scandal came out, I never stopped listening to AOA. But, my personal decision is to not listen to new NewJeans songs, CLASS:y songs, Babymonster songs etc as much as possible, so I can't form that attachment in the first place
