This is a serious issue in kpop and it feels like it’s something that’s never going to go away. It’s been happening since the beginning of time. I can’t speak for other generations but people are noticing it now because idols are suddenly debuting at their age or younger while they’re also kids. I don’t know how the male side of the industry looks (though I can name an example of a male idol who debuted as a minor), but most girl groups I can name debuted with at least 1 minor.
I mean, all 2022 has been was IVE vs Le Sserafim vs NewJeans. But like. All as bad as each other. IVE has Leeseo, Le Sserafim as Eunchae and well… NewJeans has half their lineup. And the other half only just became adults.
People don’t give a shit about these children. I can guarantee that now. Because I’ve been seeing this audio of Leeseo crying at that award show being mocked all over the place. She’s 15 years old omg leave her alone. My sister is 15 and if I saw the entire internet doing that to her I’d be outraged. 15 sounds old but you’re still developing at that age… 15 year olds act mature, but they’re just not. I’m 18, I’m still not fully mature. I’m sure the members on the forums older than me also don’t feel fully mature yet.
Other idols who debuted as minors. Let’s have a look at JYP shall we.
Suzy - debuted at 16
Tzuyu - debuted at 16
Yuna - debuted at 15
Sullyoon - debuted at 17
And what do they all have in common. THEYRE THE FUCKING VISUALS OF THEIR GROUPS. Imagine labelling a child as a VISUAL. Now TWICE debuted with a cute concept, so that was age appropriate for Tzuyu thank god. Nmixx also don’t have a provocative concept though they did face loads of hate which can’t have been good for their multiple minor members - or just their members in general.
ITZY? Had some provocative choreography. Not too much. But a couple times while I was learning their earlier choreographies I was like you really had Yuna doing this?? Then Mafia hits and had her wearing very tight clothing and was overall a less minor friendly concept. Still not too bad but not ideal considering Yuna was 17 at the time.
As for Miss A… as we go back in the generations my knowledge weakens. But I’ve heard some of their songs and seen some of their choreographies and… alarm bells I tell you.
I also know Wonder Girls has been forgotten. Like I said I really don’t know much about them. But I believe Hyuna and Sunmi were both minors at the time and I even feel like I heard rumours that Hyuna left the group because she got pregnant with jyp’s baby or something?? Disgusting.
Now let’s look at a case which kinda scares me. Wonyoung.
Wonyoung debuted at 14 years old. FOURTEEN. She was a visual. Centre. She won a competition show which, by the way, the producer created to be “healthy porn for men”. Doesn’t matter if Starship rigged her in or not. She still won it. And that win got her insane hate because people wanted someone else to win. She’s been called a pick me girl multiple times. Her weight is constantly discussed online, whether for good reasons or not. She gets a lot of positive attention. She gets a lot of negative attention. She is my age. If I were in her shoes I wouldn’t be able to take in anymore. I don’t know her. I can’t make any judgements on her current mental health. But you know if something bad did happen, all these people would be sobbing about how we need to protect idols’ mental health. Bullshit. No one gives a shit. No one cares who is debuting. And like you said, we’re all hypocrites. But honestly this industry is so so fucked up so beyond repair, the only way to get it fixed is to boycott literally everyone
