MBC has been looking into several aspects of the terrible and harsh conditions that trainees in Produce X 101and Idol Schoolhave received.
A trainee of Produce X 101has stated that they had only received 100,000 Korean Won ($83.63 USD) for each and every episode of the show that they (a number of the trainees) appeared at. He even added onto this statement:
“We had to bow down our heads and do well, and just be careful in what we do, even if we didn’t like (the situation). For each of the songs, the “underdogs” were only given 1,000,000 KRW (836.30 USD), and we weren’t given a portion of the extra profits.”
As there were many parts to the show that some entertainment agencies think were unfair to the trainees, they (entertainment companies) would instead ask for the elimination at the last minute rather than having more hope towards their trainees.
‘Idol School‘ commenced during the summer and lasted for 6 months. However, the contestants were only given uniforms that were appropriate for summer and had to wear them even when the weather was cold, with one contestant even comparing this to what it’s like in the military. The girls were also only able to buy some daily necessities once a month from a drug store, and didn’t have enough things to eat.
“They let us go to [school] once or twice a month. Those girls would hide food in their hats or underwear and then share it with the others, and they’d eat it as if they were beggars.”
