Looks doesn't matter tbh. if you look very pretty but have very little talent you're just a useless member who has nothing to boast about other than your looks.

Idol = look.
Without look you aren't idol, only artist.
Look without talent and you don't go far. But your trainee's days will help you to improve.

kpop is an industry. They need those who present well. No need to be an exceptionnal artist. If you're hard working, adjusting to the concept you are given off, and resilient to all the drama, you'll get a good carrier. Many talents are hidden, but most people don't care to support them.

Many artists are behind the scenes, producing the songs and the choreo, selling the best concept to the group they think would succeed.
So popularity is the alpha and omega. How be popular without look? It's possible but hard, you need other great qualities.

And many idol make a living from product placement. It's already hard to survive, it would be harder without an outstanding member. They split the incomes within the members.

Idol isn't just music. It's a small part of their job, since most of them don't sing live. They record the song and then work their ass to perform it the best way possible. Thus many youngsters are starting their career as trainee for idol life, but they are more interested to become actor/actress or doing variety show or other field of entertainment, not just music. They don't lack talent but it may be nor music nor singing.

The best singers have a long experience. Many didn't follow the idol path.

I get where knetizens are coming from bc their society solely praises beauty standards to the point that nothing matters more than visuals (p.s.- only 1/4 ppl in south korea haven't gotten plastic surgery) so they have no choice but to focus on the visuals, especially if they're idols, bc that's what they truly believe
but what's the point of those trainees who have been training all of those years? they didn't practice hours and days and week and months and years under vocal/rap/dance/acting/modeling/etc. training for nothing.

trying to fight this out is like playing on a seesaw, we're both sticking to our beliefs and we're not changing out views. for the knetizens, you have to understand they are very conservative and stubborn with the way their society works bc they grew up with that.
