why are you guys somehow okay with young idols debuting? a perfect example of this is newjeans. even though their ceo out there is a fucking suspected pedophile who probably needs an investigation on her. "oh i like them, their personalities, and concept." first of all we dont know them, we dont know them personally for all we know they could be completely different off screen. plus, newjeans follows a concept of lolita which is very problematic in itself. what angers me even more is the newjeans stans (not on here y'all are super nice) are acting like min heejin is a perfect goddess too.

now moving onto baby monster their debuting a 13 YEAR OLD. i don't know if its true, it's a rumor but when i heard this i was so shocked. their my age my fucking age. if its true im purely full of rage. their debuting in an industry that is so dark that they won't understand and neither will i. instead of living out their teenage years, they'll be a tool for entertainment, under the whim of yg's finger they are so young that they are naive and could be easily manipulated into contracts that could overwork and overstress them at such a young age.

what's worse is im a hypocrite, i'm a fucking hypocrite. we all are, while we all rant about how idols diets are so bad, debuting minors are bad, how we hate this one company. we feed onto it, we obsess over it, we just watch this industry slowly kill a person mentally. we don't actually do anything about this sh*t even if i boycott this one group i don't like for debuting a minor it won't effect them in any way, we'll all just end up indirectly supporting a company or someone indirectly.

I agree with this. I try to boycott NewJeans for the reasons you stated above, same thing with Babymonster if the rumors are true.
It makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable to see people almost a decade younger than I am debuting (and it's not like I'm 30). I know that they're going to be exposed to the industry at way too young an age and it will hurt them beyond repair.
But I don't think you should feel so bad. Yes sometimes I'll be exposed to NewJeans content without seeking it out, but I think if you are actively boycotting it sends a message that it's not okay. Of course it's impossible to get people to do the same as they may have other values. But even just you doing something is better than nothing.

this makes me feel a bit relieved

yes there concept is somewhat of lolita despite being disguised as teen crush. why do you think cookie exists?
Lolita style is sexy cute, like a frilly dress with a sexy act, so Cookie fits that indeed BUT it's super inappropriate for them to execute

it truly is that's why I feel very uncomfy with newjeans they have been called out multiple times for the concept. however the the sexy cute isn't only that it can be executed with aesthetics too

Y2k isn't exactly sexy cute but you can make that way, while I find Ditto a little boring, I want them to keep that concept

This is a serious issue in kpop and it feels like it’s something that’s never going to go away. It’s been happening since the beginning of time. I can’t speak for other generations but people are noticing it now because idols are suddenly debuting at their age or younger while they’re also kids. I don’t know how the male side of the industry looks (though I can name an example of a male idol who debuted as a minor), but most girl groups I can name debuted with at least 1 minor.
I mean, all 2022 has been was IVE vs Le Sserafim vs NewJeans. But like. All as bad as each other. IVE has Leeseo, Le Sserafim as Eunchae and well… NewJeans has half their lineup. And the other half only just became adults.
People don’t give a shit about these children. I can guarantee that now. Because I’ve been seeing this audio of Leeseo crying at that award show being mocked all over the place. She’s 15 years old omg leave her alone. My sister is 15 and if I saw the entire internet doing that to her I’d be outraged. 15 sounds old but you’re still developing at that age… 15 year olds act mature, but they’re just not. I’m 18, I’m still not fully mature. I’m sure the members on the forums older than me also don’t feel fully mature yet.
Other idols who debuted as minors. Let’s have a look at JYP shall we.
Suzy - debuted at 16
Tzuyu - debuted at 16
Yuna - debuted at 15
Sullyoon - debuted at 17
And what do they all have in common. THEYRE THE FUCKING VISUALS OF THEIR GROUPS. Imagine labelling a child as a VISUAL. Now TWICE debuted with a cute concept, so that was age appropriate for Tzuyu thank god. Nmixx also don’t have a provocative concept though they did face loads of hate which can’t have been good for their multiple minor members - or just their members in general.
ITZY? Had some provocative choreography. Not too much. But a couple times while I was learning their earlier choreographies I was like you really had Yuna doing this?? Then Mafia hits and had her wearing very tight clothing and was overall a less minor friendly concept. Still not too bad but not ideal considering Yuna was 17 at the time.
As for Miss A… as we go back in the generations my knowledge weakens. But I’ve heard some of their songs and seen some of their choreographies and… alarm bells I tell you.
I also know Wonder Girls has been forgotten. Like I said I really don’t know much about them. But I believe Hyuna and Sunmi were both minors at the time and I even feel like I heard rumours that Hyuna left the group because she got pregnant with jyp’s baby or something?? Disgusting.
Now let’s look at a case which kinda scares me. Wonyoung.
Wonyoung debuted at 14 years old. FOURTEEN. She was a visual. Centre. She won a competition show which, by the way, the producer created to be “healthy porn for men”. Doesn’t matter if Starship rigged her in or not. She still won it. And that win got her insane hate because people wanted someone else to win. She’s been called a pick me girl multiple times. Her weight is constantly discussed online, whether for good reasons or not. She gets a lot of positive attention. She gets a lot of negative attention. She is my age. If I were in her shoes I wouldn’t be able to take in anymore. I don’t know her. I can’t make any judgements on her current mental health. But you know if something bad did happen, all these people would be sobbing about how we need to protect idols’ mental health. Bullshit. No one gives a shit. No one cares who is debuting. And like you said, we’re all hypocrites. But honestly this industry is so so fucked up so beyond repair, the only way to get it fixed is to boycott literally everyone

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention how most of these idols begin training as young teenagers regardless of when they debut. They're basically going through puberty, the most important developmental phase in their life, to be raised as products. Because that's what kpop idols are. Lie to yourself all you want. They're characters made to be perfect, squeaky clean, ready for you to consume. All the choreos must be perfectly in sync. Might as well lip sync coz the live audio won't be any good. They must have a perfect personality. Yes, I'm sure sometimes we do see their true selves. But come on. None of us are perfect people. Not like these idols.

It's the same reason so many girl groups disband at 7 years. By then, they're all washed up. They're starting to age. They're not cute and energetic anymore. They might want to settle down and have children. They're not perfect enough anymore. They can't be sold as easy. And tbh, it wouldn't surprise me if that's why so many idols are debuting as minors. Debut a 14 year old? She'll only be 21 when the contract expires. Still easily marketable. Not like a 30 year old

Not to excuse minors debuting in kpop because I agree with the entire post but this is very common misinformation. Newjean's concept has nothing to do with lolita, it's not similar in any way, shape, or form.. Newjeans has a Y2K. People just said they have a "lolita" concept because Min Heejin is a sick mf who idolizes that kind of stuff, and because they are children which is nasty because why would u look at a kid in kpop and think; 'this must be a lolita concept!!'?

This isn't an excuse for anything, but we also need to talk about how fans contribute to this problem.
I hate to be that person but it's a bit counterproductive for fans to complain about minors in kpop while stanning groups with minors and mostly minors. Of course it's inevitable that one or two minors be in a group but these days it's mostly minors in a group. People keep eating it up and hyping these groups, so companies think that's what consumers want. The only way to stop this is to boycott and stop supporting these groups. Unfortunately though, I don't really think this is going to stop because the kpop industry is OBSESSED with youth and young people ( young girls specifically, ew ew ew). Not to mention that many companies believe female idols have an expiration date. Fans also play into it by calling idols like BoA and Irene old when they are only in their very very early 30s. These companies are trying to debut these trainees as early as possible to "extent" their "expiration date"🤢 Also the fact that the groups that do debut with mostly adults and maybe one minor that will be an adult in like a year, usually are nugu for some reason. Many people try to blame this on p3dophili@ and uncle fans but when you look at the statistics for these groups, their fans are usually in their early 20s and teens.
There are A LOT of things that go into companies debuting minors as young as 13 which can all be linked to misogyny, ageism, lookism, a very toxic sense of nostalgia, and of course p3dophili@

I totally agree and Im so glad someone is finally speaking up about this. This is a huge and real problem that should be adressed but hasn't. When I saw new jeans ages I was shocked. Half of them are way to young to be debuting and the outfits they wear!!!!!!! They are still children! It should be illegal to sexulize them like that. They aren't even outta highschool yet. Also, please don't be too hard on yourself! We are all hypocrites. Even me.....For example, I talk about all this stuff about new jeans but I listen to them everyday! And I worry about idols being put on insane diets (ex:wonyoung)while I would kill for a body and face like theirs.

the hypocrisy really does hit hard because as you mentioned, we obsess and feed into these type of things. Its so disheartening to see kids as young as 9 sign into a company and not get to live their life like a normal child would because they want to be able to fulfill a dream of theirs 😬 With the kpop industry, it seems pretty harsh looking both inside and outside. They really are damaging actual children and its so… weird..

yes and I hate it. And im slowly started to realize it's a marketing strategy they make us obsess over these things so we'll be okay with the other sh*t happening in this industry. So we'll have no one to blame but ourselves which kinda true.
