Where is Manipur?
It is a northeastern state in India with a population of more than 3 million. It borders two regions of Myanmar. The area of the state covers 22,327 km.
Who is this conflict between?
The conflict is between two tribes Kuki and Meitei.
Meitei : the Meitei have roots in Manipur, Myanmar, and other surrounding areas. most of them are Hindu.
Kuki : The Kukis are spread all across north eastern India and predominantly are christian. They’re roots are traced back to the country of Myanmar.
Meitei, Kuki, and another tribe Naga have fought a lot in the past and even now over their homelands, religious and cultural differences. However this current conflict is mostly between Meitei and Kuki.
What happened?
A viral video was posted on twitter of thousands of men parading and assaulting two women who have been stripped n*ked. the video shows the group of men taking turns — some men even being as young as 15 groping and s*xually attacking these women.
one of the victim’s father and brother were killed by these mob of men trying to protect her before they were brutally attacked on camera.
These two women were part of the Kuki tribe.
How did the Manipur government react to this?
They put an internet ban on the state. The assault happened 2 months ago, on May 4th. It wasn’t until July till everyone came to know about it through the internet and because the video went viral only now the government is taking action about it.
Why am I telling you about this?
To bring awareness to it. So far only four of the men involved in the horrifying video are being arrested and till all of those men involved in that video face punishment justice will not have been served.
My heart goes out to the victims and their families.
