Chapter 14 (Bonus): Reb!rth
Warning: This chapter contains death, ghosts and other supernatural things
It had been a day since they had pulled Cherry aside to tell her she was going to be debuting with New Dawn's new group. She hadn't been with New Dawn for too long, so this had surprised her. She wondered if it was because she had been in a group before, but she had a suspicion that it wasn't quite that easy.Warning: This chapter contains death, ghosts and other supernatural things
Now she was sitting in an dark practice room, empty except for her. She found that dancing was an easy way for her to get lost in her thoughts. When something didn't make sense, she danced. It usually worked. This time, it didn't.
Cherry had danced for two hours, but she still didn't understand what game New Dawn was playing. She knew they were playing some game. The whole world knew that, once the CEO of RE:VENGE had opened up about her problems with Park Dohee. They were both trying to become popular and beat the other. No one else mattered in this game except New Dawn and RE:VENGE.
Except everyone had thought New Dawn would try to duplicate FMC, RE:VENGE's group. Create their own eight-member girl group based on dark fairytales. Cherry was one of those people who had believed that. She knew that if they were creating a parallel, they would add her. That's why she joined, because she knew it would be an easy debut.
She was the sister of Saki and Hanni of FMC. She would represent one of those girls in this new group.
When they announced her, she wasn't surprised. What had surprised her was when only four other names were called.
FMC had eight members. Reb!rth had five.
New Dawn was playing at a different game, one that Cherry hadn't expected. That was why she couldn't understand her place in the group.
Then there were the other members of the group. Talented girls, all of them. Yena Yu, who had one of the prettiest voices Cherry had ever seen. Roh Minerva, known for her striking visuals. Lee Seoyoon, who was the perfect all-rounder, talented at everything she touched. Then there was Katie Miyakawa.
Katie had been named lead rapper, but Cherry couldn't see it. She hated listening to the girl sing, and it had surprised her when Katie had made it past all of the elimination rounds.
Then there was the person Katie claimed to be. Miyakawa, the same last name of Saki. Cherry's adopted sister. Everyone in their large, adopted family knew that Saki had a younger sister who was supposed to come with her when she was adopted. Then her sister had died and she had come alone.
Cherry had avoided her because of this. She had never spoken to the girl, because she didn't want to know. She didn't want to know how her name was the exact same as Saki's baby sister. Why she looked just like the girl in the photos Saki would occasionally show them. Her black hair, brown eyes, sharp face all reminded Cherry of Saki.
Saki had grown up believing her baby sister was dead. Cherry had grown up believing Saki's baby sister was dead. So how was this girl who had died at a young age about to debut in a K-Pop group?
Of course, it could all just be a coincidence. Katie was a popular name in the US. Miyakawa was a common surname in Japan. But how could she explain the way Katie looked exactly like Saki, down to her tight, anxious posture and the terrified look in her eyes?
Then there was the fact that Cherry wasn't from this world. Saki, Hanni and her were all from a parallel version of Earth. When her sisters had moved to this world to debut in FMC, Cherry had followed them, desperate to get away from her family that was slowly falling apart. She had been immediately scouted by ADORE and had joined their group St4rlight.
How had Katie got here? Unless a version of her who wasn't dead existed in this world, which Cherry guessed was a possible option.
The door of the practice room opened, startling Cherry. She quickly stood up as Katie walked into the room. Both girls froze as they eyed each other, unsure of what to say.
"You can use this practice room! I was just about to leave!" Cherry said quickly, running to the lockers on the side of the room to grab her bag out. Katie watched her silently as she did it, her face dark and contemplating. Cherry tried not to make eye contact with her as she rushed to the door.
"Wait."
Katie's voice was sharp and demanding. Cherry immediately stopped in the doorway as soon as she heard it. She slowly turned around, still not meeting Katie's eyes.
"Why do you act so cold towards me?" she asked in an icy voice. Cherry tried to supress a shudder that ran through her body as the girl spoke.
"How is it that you look exactly like my sister?" Cherry asked, looking up to meet the girl's gaze. She tried not to flinch as Katie's cold, brown eyes met hers.
"You already know why. I'm her sister, Katie. Didn't she ever tell you about me?"
"She told me you were dead."
Katie paused, then smirked. "Did she ever tell you how I died?"
Those words were enough to make Cherry's blood run cold. Her bag fell to the ground through frozen fingers, but she didn't stop to pick it up as she raced out the door.

Heart pounding, Cherry pulled out her phone. She was connected to the StoryTeller Society network, so she was still able to access the internet from her world. Which was what she needed at the moment.
She had hidden herself inside a janitor's closet outside of the practice hallway. She shared a dorm with Katie, so she didn't want to risk her walking in on what Cherry was about to do.
She clicked on the search bar and quickly typed "Katie Miyakawa" in. Saki had never told her the circumstances around her sister's death, all Cherry knew was that she had died in an accident. Part of her brain wondered if Katie had said that just to terrify her. There was no way that girl was the same person as Saki's sister. She probably just had fun tormenting younger trainees and used Cherry's blurted question as a way to control her.
Despite that, Cherry had to know.
Very few links had popped up with her search. Merely an obituary, a link to an orphanage's website, and a news article about Katie's death. Cherry clicked on the obituary and was surprised to see it didn't have much on it.
At the top of the page was a picture of Katie. Cherry was right, Saki's sister and the future Reb!rth member were one and the same. Hands shaking, she scrolled down.
"Katie Miyakawa, an orphan living at New Haven Orphanage, has passed away on Sunday, August 28th. She is survived only by her older sister, Sakura Miyakawa. Services will be held at the New Haven Cemetery…"
Cherry didn't finish reading. She clicked back to the links and went next to the news article, but that yielded little else. Katie had been born in New Haven, Wyoming, to two Japanese immigrants. They had died shortly after, leaving their two daughters to New Haven Orphanage. Katie had been found dead in her bed one morning, but no one knew what had caused it.
That baffled Cherry. In her world, ghosts weren't uncommon. She guessed that was who Katie was, and she had somehow followed Cherry there. For what reason, Cherry wasn't sure. Especially since this girl looked way older than the child featured in the obituary's photo. Cherry guessed she couldn't have been much older than eight when she had died.
Was she murdered? Did she want Cherry to unmask her killer? By why not enlist Saki, her biological sister, to do that instead?
One more link rested at the bottom of the search. It lead to a YouTube video, so Cherry pressed on it, although she didn't have much hope that it would lead to anything interesting.

"Hello to all my lovely supernatural fans!" a high-pitched, cherry voice greeted Cherry. That surprised her, and she jumped before realizing it was just the lady in the video. She was a pretty woman, with slender features, jet black hair and lots of make-up. She sat in a purple room, a mic off to the side. Cherry scrolled down to see who the lady was. The handle under her video showed that her channel was called Vee's Supernatural, and she had over a million subscribers. The title of the video was called: "The Mysterious Circumstances of Katie Miyakawa's Death."
Feeling like she didn't have much of a choice, Cherry pressed play on the video.
"Welcome back to another video!" the woman continued. "Today we are going to be discussing one of my favorite cases: the death of Katie Miyakawa!" She paused like she was waiting for applause. When none came, she continued. "This isn't a well known case to anyone living outside of New Haven, Wyoming, but that's where I'm from, so I had front row seats to everything that happened.
"I think I was about eight at the time these events occured. I wasn't very old, but I remember the events of it really well. It started at this old orphanage on the end of town. It housed several orphans from our town and the towns neighboring it. It was old, run-down and should've been shut down years before, especially because foster care was beginning to take over. But for some reason, it was still a thing. I remember it was like this giant gray stone building with ivy coming up the sides. It honestly looked more like a prison than an orphanage."
The woman laughed, and Cherry tried to picture what she was describing. Saki never talked about her time in the orphanage, and Cherry guessed that was why. Who would want to remember a place like that? Cherry forced herself to stop thinking about it and pay attention to the video.
"However, he numbers at the orphanage were slowly dwildling down. They were in a rush to get the last few children there adopted. I can't remember how many there were, but I know there weren't many. Maybe 10? Two of them were sisters, Sakura and Katie Miyakawa. Their parents had died in a tragic car accident on the highway that went past the town seven years before. Despite the fact they didn't live anywhere near Wyoming, they were sent to the orphanage.
"During this time, there was an older girl, about thirteen or so. Her name was Heather… Heather Billings, I think? She'd grown up in the orphanage, and chances of her getting adopted were pretty slim. I remember she would go around town and bully some of the younger kids. She targeted Sakura and Katie the most, though. We eventually stopped playing near the orphanage because of her."
That was another thing Cherry didn't know. How did this woman, a total stranger on the internet, know so much more about Cherry's sister than she did? Thinking back, Cherry realized she didn't know anything about Saki's life before she got adopted.
"I know what you all are thinking. 'Vee, what's the spooky part of this story?' And don't worry, we're getting there. I just needed to give you all a bit of background before. Now we can get into the fun stuff!" she clapped her hands excitedly.
"When Heather was 13, Sakura was 10 and Katie was 8. A family from outside Wyoming had come to the orphanage in hopes of adopting a child, and from what I remember, they had their eyes on Heather. They came to New Haven and stayed there for a while while completing the paperwork. During that time, they started getting to know the other children at the orphanage as well. I'm not entirely sure what happened to cause this, but they cancelled their adoption of Heather so they could adopt Katie instead.
"As you can imagine, neither Sakura nor Heather were happy about this. Sakura begged them to either let her come or adopt Heather instead, but they refused. This is when things start to get weird. During this time, Heather disappeared. No one knows where she went or why, but they conducted an investigation on it and she was never found. The adoption of Katie was completed, and her new family started packing up to leave."
Cherry tensed for what came next, figuring that the story was about to take whatever "supernatural turn" this woman was telling the story for.
"They never made it out. The next morning, some teachers who were walking to school found Katie walking down the street and sobbing. During the night, her adopted parents had died. When asked what had happened to them, Katie told them: 'Heather came back, except she didn't have a face.'" Vee shuddered, then continued. "I don't know about you all, but that gives me chills. Anyways, the teachers didn't believe her. They took her to the hotel room, and sure enough, her parents were dead. They had both died peacefully in their sleep. At first, everyone thought it was a gas leak, but everyone else who had been staying in that hotel was just fine and an investigation yielded nothing. So Katie went back to the orphanage with her sister.
"During the next few months, Katie was inconsolable. She constantly woke up at night, screaming from nightmares. Three months later, they found her dead in bed as well. Just like her adopted parents. There was no reason she should've died. She was completely healthy, and there was no sign of anything that would've killed her. She had just… Died."
Cherry dropped her phone, but couldn't bring herself to pause the video. So she covered her mouth with her hands and stared at the woman in horror as she calmy continued.
"About a year later, Sakura was adopted and the orphanage was closed for good. However, when I was fifteen, some friends and I were hanging out around the old place, which had been closed down for years at this point. It was falling apart, but we liked to hangout near the stream that was behind it. We stayed later than usual one day, and the sun had begun to set. One of my friends finally suggested that we go home, so we started packing up our stuff. When we were making our way down the hill, I looked into an old, dusty window of the orphanage. Staring back at me was Heather, except she was pale and where her face was supposed to be was nothing but smooth skin."
A pause in the talking left Cherry with chills. She was beginning to worry about what was going to happen next, but she was terrified to think about it.
"The girl morphed in front of me. Where Heather stood was suddenly Katie. Screams around me told me my friends had told it as well. We ran back to town, but no one believed us. Years after, I never had any question as to who killed Katie and her adopted parents. Now that the ghost problem is starting up, I figured that would be a good story to tell. Maybe this will reach the people of that town and they'll finally know what happened all those years ago to those orphans."
Katie wasn't Katie. Katie was Heather. Heather was Katie. It made so much sense, yet it didn't make any sense at the same time.
Cherry didn't know why Heather had wanted her to know all that. She didn't know why she was here, targeting her. She wasn't sure if her target was her, or Saki, or both.
But she did know that she had to get out.
Shaking, she stood up and braced herself against the wall. Her phone laid on the floor, completely forgotten as she ran to CEO Park's office.
Down the hallway, up the stairs, on the floor of the offices. Seconds felt like hours as she made her way to the very end, where CEO Park's was.
She never made it.
A familiar black haired girl stepped in her way just as she stepped into the hallway.
"Katie."
The girl made a face. "I prefer Kate."
Cherry pointed a shaking finger at her. "But you're Heather!"
"So you figured it out, and now you're running," Kate shook her head. "A coward, just like your sister."
"What?"
"She could've helped me!" Kate screamed. "She could've gotten them to cancel the adoption. She could've stopped Jewel from stripping me of my powers. Now I'm stuck in this disgusting form, in this terrible world, powerless! Do you know how unfair it is?"
"What do you want with me?" Cherry tried to ask bravely, but came out as a squeak.
Kate scoffed. "Oh, I don't care for you. You're just my bait."
"What?"
Kate reached out to her and put her hands on her face. The world grew black, and Cherry fell to the ground.
