the "this is a gift" doesn't work usually
you'd have to purchase the gift first then go to your inventory and press the gift button

It works just fine for me when I gift cards

The gift tutorial thread was made based on input from the admins at the time, so it's possible it may have been patched since then. As long as the gifts are working now and there aren't any issues, do as you please
