Just two days before the MAMA awards, apartment fires in Hong Kong burned down eight apartment buildings, a disaster resulting in many deaths.
On November 28, chapter 1 of the annual MAMA Awards kicked off, this year in Hong Kong. Due to fires, few weren't able to attend. The event opened by commemorating the victims, and lyrics related to fire were changed, as well as black ribbons worn. Additionally, high end performances such as pillars of fire were minimized.
When questioned about the event, organizer CJ ENM announced that the event would still be held as scheduled, though to commemorate the victims of the apartment fires as well. The MAMA team also asked performers to remain in a calm, serious tone, as to not induce responses from the audience, as well as to show remembrance and comfort.
Performances on the first day consisted of artists such as Alpha Drive One, Stray Kids, Hearts2Hearts, Enhypen, TWS, Super Junior, NCT Wish, and RIIZE.
Award recipients were dressed in black suits, and instead of happy and joyful smiles, they wore solemn expressions.
Groups like Alpha Drive One, a highly anticipated boy group formed from Boys Planet II, BOYNEXTDOOR, Yeonjun (TXT), i-dle, and ENHYPEN wore black ribbons on their stage as a sign of remembrance. RIIZE, Stray Kids, and aespa, who came on stage to accept their awards, also wore black ribbons and held their trophies in their arms.
As mentioned before, groups with the lyrics relating to the word 'fire' were changed, some even last minute changes. For example, in MEOVV's 'Burning Up' they changed it to 'Turn It Up,' as well as BABYMONSTER's lyric 'Burn it up, burn it up' to 'Going up, going up.'
