- Warm Compress - Soak a clean washcloth in warm (not hot) water, wring it out, and hold it against the affected ear for 10 to 20 minutes to relax muscles and encourage fluid to flow.
- Cold compress - Wrap an ice pack or frozen towel in a cloth and apply it to the ear for 10 minutes to numb sharp pain and reduce localized inflammation.
- Alternating method - Switch between warm and cold compresses every 10 minutes to maximize both circulatory drainage and numbing relief.
- Elevate your head: Sleep with your head propped up on extra pillows or rest in a reclined chair. This utilizes gravity to help the Eustachian tubes drain, preventing painful overnight pressure buildup.
- Switch sleep positions: Always sleep with the infected ear facing upward to avoid applying direct physical pressure to the painful area.
- Gentle neck exercises: Gently rotate your neck, tilt your head toward your shoulders, or lift your shoulders to help relieve mechanical tension and pressure around the ear canal.
- Steam inhalation: Take a hot, steamy shower or breathe in steam from a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head to open up the nasal passages and unblock clogged ear passages.
- Saltwater gargle: Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and gargle for 10 to 15 seconds. If your ear pain stems from a cold or a sore throat, this reduces inflammation in the back of the throat where the ear tubes connect.
- Aggressive hydration: Drink plenty of water or warm caffeine-free tea. Staying well-hydrated thins out mucus, allowing fluids trapped in the middle ear to break up and drain away naturally.
- Do not insert objects: Keep cotton swabs, fingers, and foreign tools entirely out of the ear canal, as they can scratch the delicate skin or impact earwax, worsening the infection.
Avoid unverified drops: Never put fluids like olive oil, garlic oil, or diluted apple cider vinegar into the ear if you suspect a ruptured eardrum, or if there is any fluid, blood, or pus draining from the ear canal
