UP Members Profile: UP Facts

UP (유피)(Ultra People) debuted in May of 1996 and disbanded in 1999 due to their company treating them “like puppets” according to their maknae, Sanghoo. Their parts were often very unevenly distributed with certain members having little to no parts, and unfair treatment made the group decide to split up. Throughout the years the group consisted of Kyeon, Sanghoo, Haejeong, Hyeon, Yongil, Junghee. Before disbandment they had three former members, Kang Hyeon, Yongil, and Kyeon. The three left in 1997, Yongil left and decided to dedicate himself to sports, he felt that there were many good singers in the industry and he wasn’t meant to be one of them. Hyeon left after but the reasons are unknown. After Yongil and Hyeon left, Sanghoo, Junghee, and Kyeon were brought in as replacements. Soon after Kyeon left the group and decided to become an actor. Half of the group reunited on ‘Sugarman’ in 2016 as two, Yongil and Sanghoo performing together once again.

Yongil

Stage Name: Yongil (용일)
Birth Name: Kim Yongil (김용일)
Position: Leader, Lead Vocalist
Birthday: January 1st, 1976
Zodiac Sign: Capricorn

Yongil Facts:
– Yongil left the group in 1997, after their second album, because he felt he lacked as a singer and there were many much better than him.
– He wanted to become a snowboarder but became a wakeboarder instead, being ranked 1st in Korea and 5th in the world.
– He currently runs two surf shops, one in Yangyang and one in Donghae.
– Yongil was part of the national team for wakeboarding.
– He decided to take up surfing after retiring from the national team, then opening up his two stores.
– He’s known for always wearing sunglasses, even indoors.
– He was apart of the original line up along with Haejeong and Kang Hyeon.

Haejeong

Stage Name: Haejeong (해정)
Birth Name: Lee Haejeong (이해정)
Position: Main Vocalist
Birthday: December 28th, 1976
Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius

Haejeong Facts:
– She was the only part of the original line up that remained until disbandment.
– Haejeong was the most popular member during activities because of her unique voice and stunning appearance.
– She did not reunite with the group on ‘Sugarman’ because of a conflict with her current job.
– She runs a dog clothing company and is known to love animals, often seen in pictures and videos with them.

Kyeon

Stage Name: Kyeon (켠)
Birth Name: Lee Kyeon (이켠)
Position: Vocalist
Birthday: February 20th, 1982
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Height: 177cm (5’8″)

Kyeon Facts:
– Kyeon left soon after he debuted in UP in 1997, failing to bring what was needed to UP.
– He is now an actor, debuting in 2005 with ‘Hello, Francesca’ as Kyun.

Jeonghee

Stage Name: Jeonghee (정희)
Birth Name: Lee Jeonghee (이정희)
Position: Lead Rapper
Birthday: June 4th, 1982
Zodiac: Gemini

Jeonghee Facts:
– Jeonghee was known for looking like a boy. During their UP days they were often mistaken for three boys and one girl.
– Jeonghee was in the second generation of UP along with Sanghoo, brought in after Hyeon left.
– She is now a chef in the United States and owns a famous restaurant in LA.
– Though her and Sanghoo were both rappers in the group, she was often the only one that got more than one line.

Sanghoo

Stage Name: Sanghoo (상후)
Birth Name: Park Sanghoo (박상후)
Position: Main Rapper, Maknae
Birthday: November 5th, 1982
Zodiac: Scorpio

Sanghoo Facts:
– Sanghoo is part of the second generation in UP, he was brought in with Jeonghee after Hyeon left in 1997.
– He joined Yongil on Sugarman in 2016 to perform ‘Puyo Puyo’ and ‘Sea.’
– Sanghoo released his book, “My Heart Wind Blow” on December 8th, 2014.
– Sanghoo continued his music career under the name ‘LEON’ and debuted in 2014.
