Understanding ENHYPEN’s Concept: Given-Taken

Understanding ENHYPEN’s Concept: Given-Taken

Although only having debuted a mere 2 years ago, ENHYPEN has a pretty large following. Attracting fans with their catchy songs and convoluted music videos. Wondering about that vampire seen in Given-Taken? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s start with the basics:

“ENHYPEN” Meaning:

As you probably already guessed, the name ENHYPEN originates from the word “hyphen”. A hyphen (-) is a punctuation symbol that connects to two or more words to discover a new meaning. And much like hyphens, the members will grow, connect, and discover each other. ENHYPEN’s “purpose” is to connect people, generations and even the world.

Given-Taken

The music video of “Given-Taken” tells us a story of transformation but through the lens of supernatural powers. The video has some classic horror movie elements, which makes it an interesting watch.

 Ok, so what’s going on?

ENHYPEN has a vampire concept that can be seen being laced into a majority of their videos. Given-Taken uses this trope full on. The first supernatural clue is Jungwon’s bloody nose at the opening. This an indicator of an intense use of psychic powers. The video only shows this modern day looking seen again towards the end of the video, supposedly meaning that the video is a flashback showing how Jungwon became a vampire.

Story plot

In the first seen following Jungwon’s opening scene, we see Enhypen frozen in an old, eerie living room inside either a supposed orphanage or a “house for gifted children”. This seems to be during the Victorian era. Throughout the video we see each member getting a power of some sort. Sunoo is the original vampire, who bites Jungwon.

Jay and Jake lead us into Sunghoon’s first scene. We see him sitting on the edge of a bathtub while blood trails down the wall spelling the word “FATE”. Sunghoon might also be a vampire, even though his hand burnt when he was inside the building, not due to exposure to the sun.The music video also gives Ni-ki the ability to levitate. Furthermore, Heeseung was seen swallowing a pill. It may have given him some sort of power related to memory as we see quick flashes of old photos right after. Jake and Jay’s supernatural abilities are unclear. Though, we often see Jake crawling on the dining room table in agony.

This is the building we see in the music video.

This is the I-Land training center

Another seemingly key point in the music video is the partially broken tower. Although it’s not very clear what it represents, some fans think it might be a reference to the I-Land training center. It’s repeated presence makes you try to figure out it’s significance. Though, there are no similarities between the two buildings.

Anything else?

Words can be connected together by a hyphen to create a new meaning. When the hyphen is removed, the words can stand alone. This idea of connection while simultaneously being separated is expressed in multiple scenes in the music video.

Jungwon is separated from the others

In one scene in particular, Jungwon is physically separated from the others. Another similar scene, is when all seven members disappear from the living room, leaving Sunoo alone and “isolated”.

ENHYPEN’s music video for “Given-Taken” is a lot to unfold. But really it’s just showing us an idea of transformation that parallels their journey from being trainees under an international spotlight through I-Land to debuting with everyone having high expectations for them. They even show a point where they feel isolated even though they’re surrounded by people.
