During a recent V Live Taehyun was discussing TXT's upcoming comeback and said the following regarding sales:
"Well, our happiness...is directly related to the album sales numbers. I want to be happier. I'm sorry, but you won't be able to help but buy [the album] once the contents are released one by one."
He said this in a 'half-joking manner'.
Currently people are viewing his statement in completely different ways, but most seem to be offended.
The reason being that he was essentially asking people to spend money to buy more of their upcoming album.
Some netizens pointed out that compared to the majority of rookie groups, TXT is doing astronomically better in sales.
So this comment could also be viewed as insensitive and privileged considering TXT's success.
Some also mentioned that a lot of TXT's fanbase is younger and don't have the money to buy albums. In turn making them feel bad.
But there are others who say that he was just joking. I feel like even if it was a joke, this is kind of insensitive and he shouldn't have said it.
There is one comment I found left at the article that really describes my stance on this statement:
the only reason this statement leaves a bad taste in my mouth is because of the privilege and ignorance behind the remark, not that he's not allowed to feel this way because of the industry. though i do not doubt he worked extremely hard to debut and continues to work hard as a part of TXT (he's my bias and i recognize his immense talent), i think this comment is rude towards the 90% of kpop groups who do not have the privilege of large company backing and are therefore basically doomed to be unsuccessful from the start. like there are so many talented, humble and brilliant kpop artists promoting right now that will never sell albums or turn a profit because they are from a small company, so according to this logic, should they not be happy or content with the music they release? is it okay that they view themselves as failures? i would never wish that. its an industry problem, not a reflection of the artist' talent or music quality. for me that is why this comment sounds tone deaf, but i don't see a major issue with it, i assume most kpop idols have this mentality.
What is your opinion on this?
Was it a joke that was blown out of proportion, or was Taehyun displaying the privilege that comes with being from a big company?
