During a recent V Live Taehyun was discussing TXT's upcoming comeback and said the following regarding sales:
"Well, our happiness...is directly related to the album sales numbers. I want to be happier. I'm sorry, but you won't be able to help but buy [the album] once the contents are released one by one."
He said this in a 'half-joking manner'.
Currently people are viewing his statement in completely different ways, but most seem to be offended.
The reason being that he was essentially asking people to spend money to buy more of their upcoming album.
Some netizens pointed out that compared to the majority of rookie groups, TXT is doing astronomically better in sales.
So this comment could also be viewed as insensitive and privileged considering TXT's success.
Some also mentioned that a lot of TXT's fanbase is younger and don't have the money to buy albums. In turn making them feel bad.

But there are others who say that he was just joking. I feel like even if it was a joke, this is kind of insensitive and he shouldn't have said it.

There is one comment I found left at the article that really describes my stance on this statement:
the only reason this statement leaves a bad taste in my mouth is because of the privilege and ignorance behind the remark, not that he's not allowed to feel this way because of the industry. though i do not doubt he worked extremely hard to debut and continues to work hard as a part of TXT (he's my bias and i recognize his immense talent), i think this comment is rude towards the 90% of kpop groups who do not have the privilege of large company backing and are therefore basically doomed to be unsuccessful from the start. like there are so many talented, humble and brilliant kpop artists promoting right now that will never sell albums or turn a profit because they are from a small company, so according to this logic, should they not be happy or content with the music they release? is it okay that they view themselves as failures? i would never wish that. its an industry problem, not a reflection of the artist' talent or music quality. for me that is why this comment sounds tone deaf, but i don't see a major issue with it, i assume most kpop idols have this mentality.

What is your opinion on this?
Was it a joke that was blown out of proportion, or was Taehyun displaying the privilege that comes with being from a big company?

I think, even if it was just said in a "half-joking manner", it should've been thought out before being said. Obviously as stated, there are younger fans who feel bad about not being able to buy the albums and also coming from a big company is a lucky thing and I'm not really mad about this or anything but just how I view it. I know people usually say things without really thinking so it could've been something that accidently slipped out of his mouth and didn't intend to say it but I sort of doubt that. I agree with the comment that @Lost_in_the_Dream put there too. Being under a big label can sort of change your mind a bit from what I think. But overall I think it's not a big deal and he's just promoting(?) or trying to get more people who CAN buy the album to buy it. :)

See, that’s the way they differ from BTS- A lot of people didn’t think they’d make it, and Hybe at that tome was suffering after the Glam scandal, but now TXT doesn’t know what that feels like, unfortunately.

Sometimes you say your true feelings through jokes. He's not on the wrong for worrying about album sales because they matter a lot but that statement was sorta insensitive and he could've skipped it, even if he was half-joking.
There are artists coming from smaller companies with underwhelming album sales no matter how talented they are and many fans who can't afford to buy their albums but it doesn't mean they love them any less or don't want them to be happy.

I've seen knetz sending hate to Taehyun and it made me rethink this whole situation. I think the only mistake he made was taking MOAs and TXT's inside joke to a radio show. TXT and MOA tease each other a lot and TXT have made sarcastic jokes like that in the past MOAs have made jokes with TXT too. I feel like when he took the inside joke to the radio show where non fans are listening in, caused misunderstanding and anger. It's obvious he was just promoting the album. I don't think this is that much of an issue for knetz to send him hate, some knetz said the situation was blown out of proportion and people get mad over everything. I agree only to an extent though. There's somethings people have a right to be pissed about, sure they can be pissed about this. But it doesn't mean send him or the rest of TXT hate.

For me, it just sounds like a sarcastic joke blown way out of proportion. I've seen and heard other groups make similar remarks. I think it was a bit insensitive, but I don't think it should be enough to warrant such a reaction from fans. That's just my view.

Even if he was joking, some people have trouble to recognize what's joke and what not. But aside from that I think it was a bad idea to say that. Even as a joke it's still kinda..rude? Like you could understand it as if the fans and their support are not enough and he NEEDS MOA to buy their stuff..
