I think it is important that this is brought to attention.
This is massive tragedy happening in a country we all gain joy from. They are hurting, so even if this is just being posted on a forum that Koreans will never see, I think tribute should be paid.
I feel even more compelled to post this thread due to a similar mass casualty event that occurred in my town.
Itaewon is famous for its annual Halloween Party held in the streets of the district. It seems it was especially popular this year due to the mask mandate being lifted. Over 100,000 people allegedly showed up to the event.
During the celebrations there was a crowd crush of people from the event, people coming out of subway stations to join the event, and people coming out the Hamilton Hotel. Partygoers started being forced into a 4 meter wide alleyway. Many people were trampled over.
As police and medical services arrived they had difficulty gaining access to those in need due to the crowds and allegedly several people dancing in front of the emergency vehicles.
At the scene multiple people were given CPR by responders and citizens. However many of them did not make it, as they either suffocated in the crush or received other injuries from being trampled.
The current number of those who died is 151 and rising. Over 80 people are still in the hospital, some in critical condition. So the number of the deceased could increase.
There have been several rumors about the cause. Things like drugs or a gas leak have been ruled out by the government. The statement that the appearance of a celebrity causing the stampede/crush has not been ruled out yet.
Nearly all the victims have been identified at this point, with the majority of victims being females in their mid-20s. The casualties also include several internationals from Iran, Norway, China, Thailand and Uzbekistan. In addition, 10 people have not been able to be identified as they are under the age of 17 and don't have an ID card yet.
Due to this tragedy the president of South Korea has declared a national state of grieving. This has resulted in many events and broadcasts being cancelled. This includes several kpop comebacks, releases, and concerts.
This article contains a pretty good breakdown of everything if you are interested. Just be warned it is quite graphic with pictures and videos of people being resuscitated as well as dead bodies. https://www.koreaboo.com/news/itaewon-halloween-emergency-crowd-surge-accident-closer-look/
Even though you may not be affected by this event, I hope you can pray (or whatever alternative) for the victims, their families and friends, and for the nation of South Korea as a whole. They are truly struggling right now, and could use all the thought and help we can give them.
As someone who has gone through something similar (but on a much lesser scale), I feel the need to do anything I can do. I will most likely try to donate and will post a link if anything is put out by the south korean government officially. Really, anything helps during difficult times like these.
I hope you can all find at least a minute in your day to send kind thoughts to the country that brings us such joy with its music.
