I feel like this is a more complex topic than it just being a trend. While I wish idols would sing live, I know in some cases it can be a bit unrealistic for them to do it all the time or just needs to be assisted.
For example: if an idol loses their voice obviously they will have to lip sync. If they have complex choreography they may need a backing track or to have the more difficult parts be lipped. This is also another issue that kpop choreographies are being made too difficult that the idols cannot do their main duty and sing/rap.
However, I do believe lip sync is becoming more popular and used in unnecessary ways. A prime example of this is aespa. They did not sing live until Coachella, and they had no reason not to. I think this is due to the standard of perfection becoming higher in the industry. SM entertainment has taken to not letting their idols sing live because they do not want to risk and tiny little mistake. Other companies are seeing this and feel the need to push this same standard of perfection on their groups and have them lip sync so it makes them the even more perfect idol. So in a way I think the trend here is aiming for perfection, and lip syncing is a side effect.
I also think that the over usage of lip syncing and backing track is another symptom of beauty standards and the idols that are debuting now. A company would much rather debut someone who fits the beauty standard and has little talent, compared to the opposite. I think having so many idols in a group who are unable to sing in an attractive manner while dancing results in the increased lip sync.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

I feel like the boosted popularity of Kpop around the world could also have something to do with this increased use of lip-syncing. If you take a look at previous generations of Kpop/Kpop groups, before the big blow up (I suppose), you can see lip-syncing was a lot less used, compared to now where it's a lot more common. With so many more eyes watching them through screens, they (companies) want to show their audience the best sides of their idols or, as you could say, the picture perfect idol in them. The industry is a scary place where one wrong move could lead to your downfall; at any point you could slip and it'll be "over" for you, I guess. Of course, making mistakes are common and are no big deal, however, everything in the entertainment industry is kinda like a gamble: you don't know how people will react. Lip-syncing is kinda like a safety blanket. Companies take the best takes from their idols and basically mush it together into a pie of perfection. They already know how most people will react and so they use that as a shield. This way, they can ensure mistakes won't be made while staying in the good graces of the public and preform for fans.

(Sorry for the long blurb! This is just a topic that's had my interest for a while! I'll probably come back later to clean this up!)

1st about the singing while dancing thing....
My answer would be Itzy...
Aespa's choreography is not difficult if you compare it with Itzy's choreography...
But itzy sings live all the time where aespa doesn't...
And about the perfection thing ,, if you see aespa's performance of lip syncing it's no where near being perfect.... Like they don't even do good with lip syncing.... They not only don't sing live but they don't even try to lip sync perfectly....
And don't talk about lee so min , he is a person who thinks lip syncing is a gener ๐ŸคŒ
And companies will give priorities to beauty than talent till people are good with it....
Like if you ask a fan about who is their fav group and why.. The most common and typical answer would be ( X is my fav and they are my fav because they are handsome/beautiful, pretty or cute...not because they are talented )

And for your information lip syncing isn't something that leads to perfection... It doesn't show perfection but lack of ability...

A Idol who sings live (with or without doing some mistakes) are far more better and perfect than the ones who get a pass by lip syncing 99 out of their 100 performances...
You can think otherwise like if you're a fan of lee so min who thinks lip syncing is a gener...And be a self claim vocal coach (like 90% of mys) and defend them

I'm not saying aespa are good at lip syncing, in fact I'm not regarding the group at all. The company makes them lip sync because they want to market them as perfect AIs. The aespa members skill in lip syncing is not what I was discussing. And I think based on what we are seeing with a lot of SM groups, they care more about stable vocals that are fake then if someone is doing a crappy job at lip syncing.
And I think you mean lee soo man?
And I wouldn't say that's the case with every kpop stan that they on bias based on visuals. Sure it plays a part but for people who actually stan the group they stan the person they vibe with the most. I feel like it is more nonfans who pick the most attractive member as they are less invested in the group.

Furthermore, it's not really an idols job to lip sync. They are expected to sing/rap and dance when it comes to performance. Think about the levels of criticism an idol will get if they sing or dance poorly. Idols like Jennie and Lia have been made enemy number one because of their dancing skills in the past. A prime example is that Twice More&More encore stage. Momo sang one line badly and there were so many hate comments and articles. Now whenever twice does an encore stage they all look nervous and just stand still. When aespa get's hate for lip syncing it never goes to this level because the argument is brought up that they can still sing their lines in studio. So of course companies are more focused on the vocal and dance part of the performance because it matters the most.

Oh, I wasn't saying that lip-syncing leads to perfection; in fact, I believe quite the opposite. Practice is the best way to improve. I was just saying with the increased number of eyes watching their moves, some companies (like SM) use lip-syncing to market their idols as perfect since haters and other people will use any chance they can get to bring groups down, including making mistakes while singing and preforming live (which is natural and shouldn't be something people should be criticized for).

Maybe I wrote my thoughts down wrong, but I don't believe that lip-syncing is the best option (unless the idol isn't feeling well or has something else that may do more harm than good for them to sing).
