ok. before i go on a rant, let me just say that this is no hate to the girl,i'm shading demon yg.
so,as most blinks know blackpink is a very popular group. obviously there company has acknowledged that. now, with every company, they all have a different strategy for promoting there idols. yg's way for promoting blackpink is quite interesting. if your a blink, you must know how many views blackpink mv's get. here's how.
when blackpink got popular, like REALLY popular, blinks started to notice how the girls were not having any comebacks. the only thing they got was modeling from the girls, and episodes of blackpink house. when blacks mv FINALLY dropped the views were going insane. this is because blinks waited so long for a comeback, people got very excited and watched the mv. this strategy that yg has created is smart, but he doesn't realize the fans are patiently waiting for anything music related from blackpink. but, seeing how this strategy worked he kept doing. but now that blackpink has finally released a FULL ALBUM,we just have to wait for 11 months for a comeback. :')
I'm afraid that if I say my raw opinion on this I'm going to get even more hated here but whatever.
YG sucks yes but the marketing strategy is very smart and essentially what made Blackpink so crazy popular. Things got worse after they had their peak with D4 that they started to look more like models than music artists...but that's what YG always wanted. He created Blackpink as the "prettier" version of 2NE1, he wanted to have a girl group with breathtaking visuals that would take over the world so it was obvious he had their looks as a primary concern. Now I'm not saying all Blackpink has is looks okay? But to YG that's what matters and has always mattered the most. So according to YG Blackpink is; looks/Blinks money > everything else.
Second, he knows the fandom very well but to my surprise I've seen many Blinks getting tired of waiting for new music and feel like giving up on Blackpink. Now I know he's not the CEO anymore but I don't believe for a second he no longer has a saying in the company he literally built himself.
That's unfortunate for Blackpink in a sense that they have had little development/growth as music artists (since they're forced to very specific genres/concepts that are aimed to be hits and are most likely not allowed to experiment with their personal preferences) but other than that I don't think they're feeling that pressured themselves because of how popular they have become. Ofc they want to have more songs, but we'll see for sure how fed up they are with this treatment in 2023 when the time to renew their contracts will come.
I don’t like YG but I can’t deny that’s they’re literal geniuses and have Blinks wrapped around their fingers. YG knows exactly what they’re doing and how to get the best results they want because they release enough content to keep blinks in the fandom but they keep the comebacks back because they know that’s ultimately what blinks want. The only way YG is gonna change is if every blink were to boycott Blackpink and to stop feeding into the success until YG gives them a fair comeback schedule but we all know that’s never going to happen
Kpop as an industry wouldn't exist without capitalism. The law of supply and demand is a key part of capitalism. Keep the supply low, the demand goes up; keep the supply high, the demand goes down. Obviously there are exceptions to this rule - look at TWICE, for instance -- but in BP's case, that's what's working for them. The supply of music is low, so people want more and willing to wring every ounce of content out of the music that they can get. It's disappointingly genius.
I was wondering the same thing. I want to hear the new album as soon as possible, but there is no information about the exact release date. It seemed that if I searched for everything I needed on other websites, I could find the date. But unfortunately, even on the official page - there is no necessary information. I think this is because she is not creating anything right now. Or because they have lousy PR managers. In my opinion, for such purposes, it is better to use the help of professionals. Now you can find many web SMM panel that can be useful for advertising the group. Also, I do not understand why they do not publish records from concerts for such a long time.
Honestly they are very smart with this. Each comeback is more and more popular. With Pink Venom, I'm pretty sure they knew that it would get backlash, but guess what backlash also brings? A T T E N T I O N. Which is exactly what they want because then they would break records with people watching it because they need people from outside the fandom to check it out as well, even if it has to be a "bad" song, which honestly, "bad" songs bring a lot of attention. People will watch it rapidly and say "omg it's so bad" but guess what you're doing? You're adding a view to the video. And honestly blinks are so deprived of content, that they will absolutely eat up ANYTHING. And tbh, I didn't even hate pink venom, I think it's a nice song. But to the people that did, and still watched the MV multiple times to review it, or criticize it, still gave bp atleast one view. and that is what I think to be YG's Marketing Stradegy.
screw you yg for not letting the girl's true protentional bloom.
Just stumbled upon this thread from 2021 and your insights were super on point, even back then! YG's scarcity-driven strategy with BLACKPINK is a double-edged sword. It's like they're using that age-old 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' tactic to drive us crazy between comebacks, huh?
Since we're on the topic of marketing strategies, it makes me think about how online stores play a similar game sometimes. Take Shopify, for example. Customized online shops can really build hype for products, making them more desirable. I came across this service that offers shopify web development, and I can't help but imagine what they could do for a BLACKPINK merch store.
So it's been two years since your original post. Has your perspective changed at all, given everything that's happened since then?
I'm not afraid to be honest.
YG needs to stop letting them or encouraging them to put on these thotty performances. I think its done to appeal to the western audiences, but its unfair to the girls to sacrfice their dignity like that to keep up with what western artists are doing. They dont need to do that to sell.
I agree that YG’s strategy seems more focused on building hype than satisfying the fans’ need for new music. While it does create anticipation, it can also lead to disappointment when there’s not much to look forward to. Hopefully, the company will take note and give fans more consistent music releases in the future!
