Japanese actor and idol Mizuki Itagaki has been found dead at age 24, months after he went missing in January.

His family posted a statement on the star’s Instagram Stories to announce his death on April 17. The family said he died of “an unfortunate accident”, but did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his death.

The statement added: “We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the fans who warmly supported Mizuki Itagaki during his life, and the staff and individuals who took care of him in his work.”

The family said he had been missing since end-January, and had been battling mental health issues since 2024.

“With the help of friends and the police, we continued to search for him. But recently, we were informed by the police that his body was discovered in Tokyo,” they added. “We are sincerely sorry for the delay in reporting this to his fans, who have been worried about him.” The family said Itagaki wanted to spread joy to people through his entertainment career. “Just as he was beginning to take steps towards returning to show business, his life ended in such a manner. It must be something that is regretful to him as well.”

Itagaki abruptly departed from his management agency Stardust Promotion in March 2024 with little explanation, and his fan site was shut down as well.

In November, he made a long post on Instagram explaining why he left. He said he was in an “extremely volatile state emotionally” in January 2024, due to stress and pressure, resulting in symptoms like sleeplessness and refusal of food. He felt he could no longer be an actor and shaved his head without telling his agency, eventually parting ways with it.

In that post, he assured fans that he had recovered and was committed to continuing as an actor. In another post made on Dec 31, Itagaki said he was looking forward to taking on new challenges in 2025.

He got his start in show business as a child star, after he was talent-scouted at age 10 in front of the Hachiko Statue outside Shibuya station while shopping with his mother. He was a member of the boy band M!lk from 2014 to 2020.

He acted in series such as Japanese period dramas Burning Flower (2015), also known as Hana Moyu, and Awaiting Kirin (2020).

May he R.I.P
