☆ ITZY - LOCO [Ver. C] ☆
The ‘Bet On Me’ music video by ITZY was released today at midnight KST time. Out of all their music videos, I think it’s one of the clearest that it expresses a deep meaning and a storyline, which also ties in specifically with the lyrics. I’ve seen some theories going around about what all the different scenes mean and thought I would like to share my interpretations of each member.

I must note, for some members I have more fleshed out ideas than others, but if you’ve seen the MV and think you have stuff to add, feel free to comment.

Starting with Chaeryeong who I thought was one of the easier ones but I’m actually a little stuck with her.
We see quite a few scenes with Chaeryeong walking alone, but then the line “again dreaming, I reach out far away” and we see her teleported into a greyish room where she’s surrounded by blurry images of herself in various dance poses. She ends up curling into a ball with cuts on her face. I’ve seen people interpret this as being surrounded by expectations for herself which she feels she can’t obtain and becomes overwhelmed. However, another Chaeryeong comes over and wipes the injuries on her face. Then Chaeryeong opens her eyes and comes back to the real world. I think this basically suggests Chaeryeong has become overwhelmed by idol life and only she is the one who can protect herself. I also like the fact it’s implied this scene takes place in her imagination, because Chaeryeong is known for zoning out quite a lot. Idk it feels like a little bit of an Easter egg. But anyway, she opens her eyes and is able to come back to the real world. Then she begins running with Yeji.

Ryujin is next who again I struggled with but I saw an interpretation and I agree with it so this is my theory. At the beginning of the music video, Ryujin locks herself in a room and closes the certains making it completely black. However eventually the windows blow open and we see the room become messy and stressful to be inside. I believe this is a representation of Ryujin hiding away her emotions and bottling them inside. Ryujin speaks quite frequently about how she doesn’t like opening up to her members. I think this is a representation of what happens when you hide away from your feelings. Eventually it all bursts open and then something you did to protect yourself becomes just as unsafe. So in the end, Ryujin has to unlock the door and leave the room, and when she does, she is able to join Yeji and Chaeryeong running.

Lia. Again, Lia was a hard one but I saw an interpretation which seemed spot on to me. So we see Lia in a messy room alone. The room is fairly dark. Later we see another Lia looking through a warehouse where she finds a box and opens it. The Lia in the messy room is shaking and eventually we see a creak of light creep into the room. Lia’s scenes are basically one Lia trapped inside a box and another Lia letting her out. To put someone inside a box is to limit down what they’re capable of or worth. Many people insult Lia saying she can’t dance or she isn’t worthy of being a main vocalist, and these insults trap Lia inside a box which is messy with all these worries. But she’s ready to let herself out and escape from all this hurt. And when she’s out of the box, she runs with the other members.

Yuna. God Yuna’s scenes hurt so much as a Yuna ult. We see Yuna sat alone on a train, surrounded by posters of herself from various ITZY eras. She’s the only one in this carriage and the carriage next to her is full of people. Even though she’s surrounded by all these photos of her as this beautiful idol, Yuna has the lines “feeling alone” and “I want to get out of here”. Later, we see scenes where all the other ITZY members are running through the train and they’re smiling and happy, pulling Yuna along. But Yuna still seems worried and concerned. Towards the end of the music video, Yuna stops and looks around at the train carriage, with notably a poster from Sneakers era being seen in the background, before she finally runs through to another carriage, and is finally seen running with the members. I believe Yuna’s scenes have two meanings. One of them is the feeling that despite fame and success of idols, they lose that ability to just be a normal person. Yuna is isolated from the rest of the people on the train because she’s an idol and is therefore different. But then Yuna’s idol image also makes her feel vulnerable. Especially during Sneakers era, Yuna has begun receiving quite bad hate, and when she stops running on the train, I believe this is her questioning whether she still wants to be ITZY’s Shin Yuna or whether she wants to give up. The members all seem okay to her and it feels like only she is struggling. But ultimately she does rejoin her members running together. What’s also interesting is Yuna is the last member to run alongside the members, and when we see her running it feels like she’s “catching up” to them rather than running with them to start with. This could also be a subtle nod to the fact Yuna was the last member to join ITZY, with the other 4 all joining at about the same time.

Finally Yeji. A lot of people have been meming Yeji because she spends the entire MV running. And like, damn she must’ve gotten a lot of exercise during this filming cant wait for the behind the scenes LMAO. But I believe Yeji in this music video is a representation of her being ITZY’s leader. Some say Yeji is running away from something but I disagree. I think Yeji is actually searching for something. And even though we don’t see it in the MV, I think she’s actually running to protect the members. I think the reason we never actually see Yeji save them is 1. Because Yeji alone couldn’t save the members from their fears, they had to save themselves, but Yeji was still here to guide them, and 2. Because Yeji had expressed fears in the past about not trusting herself to lead ITZY. And so Yeji’s running is also her trying to stay strong for her members. There’s also a scene where there is a gap in the road, but unlike Ryujin or Yuna for example who take time to think and decide to overcome their fears, or Lia and Chaeryeong who are able to help themselves escape from their situation, Yeji just has to take a leap of faith and jump right over. I think this represents that as a leader, Yeji doesn’t have the time to stop and doubt herself, she has to just keep going even when it gets tough and could go badly.

At the end of the music video, the five of them are running through a tunnel which resembles the tunnel from the Dalla Dalla music video, their debut. The song also has lyrics about choosing themselves and believing in themselves. When ITZY debuted, their songs were about self love and about not caring what haters say. When they debuted, they were all confident and excited to be part of the industry. However, now they’ve experienced it, they realise it’s not as easy as just ignoring what people say. The industry has become hateful towards them and frightening and some of them doubt whether they’re capable of doing it. But they choose themselves and they decide not to doubt themselves, and run towards this tunnel. I believe this is them returning to that confidence they had when they were rookie idols, and deciding to move on from all the obstacles they’ve had to face.

The song is already starting to grow on me but this MV was just sooo painful. Seeing all this struggle they’ve faced alongside these lyrics. They’re noticeably different from their debut songs where they didn’t care and had no doubts. I hope that this music video is them genuinely moving on from it, though I doubt just saying “I don’t care” is good enough. But furthermore, like how their debut songs had their fans singing “I love myself” “I keep walking” and “I wanna be me”, this song has their fans saying “I choose me”. So I think this isn’t just a song for ITZY to move on, but for Midzy to as well feel stronger in themselves and to stop doubting themselves.

I hope you enjoyed this theory. None Of My Business will be dropping on July 24th followed by Cake and the rest of the album on July 31st
