I didn't take a gap year, but I wish I had. I went away for college right away, knowing I didn't want to but not wanting to disappoint anyone. I'm not saying that because it would have been the right choice for me means that it's the right choice for you. I'm just saying that you should think it through, talk to someone you trust who has no ulterior motives, and then make the decision that's best for you. Do what makes you happy (as long as it doesn't hurt someone else in the process, lol), it's your life.

Hope this helped!

i just finished taking an unintentional gap year between finishing my bachelor's degree and starting grad school. in my case it ended up being mostly a waste of time and more trouble than it was worth. all i had to show for it was a certificate for teaching english (not a bad thing at all but certainly not something i needed a whole year to complete). i didn't take a gap year between high school and university bc i actually skipped a grade to enter uni early bc my family needed the financial aid. it ended up being for the best, had i taken a gap year i would've surely forgotten all the little math i knew and never would've passed my requisite math course.

my recommendation is, if you do decide to take a gap year, have a plan to follow through on in that year so that you don't end up just spending a year doing nothing. not that taking a break is bad, a good thing about gap years is being able to take it easy before jumping back into studies. but setting a goal or two that you can work on in that time will help you keep some structure during that year so its not as hard when go back to study (rn im nervous as all hell bc i'm afraid i've forgotten everything from my undergrad studies, which is silly but there you have it). something like learning a new language or picking up a hobby or skill that you never had time for before could be a good suggestion that shouldn't take up a lot of your time (and if your uni is anything like mine, you may be required to learn a language to graduate, this way you'll have a step up!).

i do think taking gap years that won't throw your studies out of whack requires discipline, so think hard about the pros and cons of taking it. take it if you need the time and make the most of it, so that you don't look back and think of that gap year as a waste of time that didn't really benefit you.
