Oh about their disagreement it was because Mello was jealous of Near since Near was most likely to become the successor of L. They were meant to work together in the anime but Mello didn't want to because he preferred to work alone if I recall correctly. So they became rivals but it was mostly Mello who repelled Near. In the end Near admitted that Mello contributed into discovering Kira's true identity.

Well, just be careful, I heard the VA had "damaged" his diafraghm (and no I don't know proper way to spell that in Englsih, so sue me! ), or something when he recorded that (he made a recovery but still...).
